Ok, based on feedback in a seperate thread,

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?threadid=45283

along with posts I have read in this forum, I am beginning to think my Sony drive (DW D22A) might not be the best choice. There are a number of reasons behind this thought, not the least of which is that Sony doesn't appear to be good at releasing new firmware, and I don't want to get into hacking in a firmware not actually released for that drive.

So, with that being said, which drive should I buy? I originally bought a dual layer drive, but based on the price of DL media, I don't think I will be using that feature much. My main goal is to have a drive that will be able to burn +R media with a booktype of DVD-Rom with the best overall compatibility for stand alone DVD players (new and older dvd players).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Billy

I like my pioneer 108, it's DL, automatically sets book type to dvdrom, and has had a few releases of firmware. In fact, the latest release allows for high speed + and - R burning on more media. Mine is in an external USB/FW box and works good. Not one coaster yet.

When you do whittle down your extensive choice, take a read through: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters and see what other people think of the writer.....

Every one here is going to suggest their DVD writer/burner %90 of the time. The bottom line is "Different Strokes, for Different Folks".

Many people that I know of, have had good luck with the "Sony" brand. I personally have (you guess it) a Sony DRU-510A Dual Format Burner. But please do as Mig$y suggested, when you do find one, write down the brand and model number. Then go to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters . And read some reviews given by people that have bought and used this writer.

Never understood why people buy Sony burner - most of them are just rebadged Lite-Ons. There is more firmware updates for Lite-On than Sonys and there is also a little program where you can write your own firmware.

And no - I don't have a Lite-On... :)

Ok, I think I am going to buy a Lite-on, but the question is does it matter which model I get?

I need a black faceplate. I have looked at the SOHW-1633S, but didn't see any updated firmware for it on Liteon's site.

I have a lite-on about 6months old, is a single layer 4X and has worked flawlessly, I've burned a lot of DVD around 100 or more and a few CDs and it is going strong. My brother just bought a 16X dual layer Lite-on and he is happy with it. They both burn +R and -R media.
