One method:

1. Use a program (ATI Media Center, Dscaler, etc) to capture the video/audio to the harddrive.

2. Use a bitrate calc. to determine the bitrate for encoding to divx.

3. Use virtualdub to resize if needed and encode to divx. Set video to "full processing mode" and select the format you with to encode the video to with the "Compression" option. With that processor speed, a regular length movie can take 12 hours or more to encode.

Firstly, ATI STINK!!!!!!!!!!! (for capturing)

Secondly, you will not get good quality when capturing from an VHS source.

When capturing, use these settings:

NO RECOMPRESSION (make sure you use NTFS as FAT32 only supports up to 4GB per file)

CD quality Audio uncompressed

320*240

25/30fps

YU12

These are the main and best settings to use when capturing.

nope

fat32 is limited to 4gb but avi files are limited to 2gb, maybe you got that mixed up!?

Why use YU12 for capturing ?
I mean what's the difference from YUV and UYV2 ?

I have been used ATI MMC 7.1 (ATI AIW Radeon) to capture video from a VHS in CD resolution using divx 4.12 and the quality of the video not stink at all, even capturing in mpeg or mpeg2 the quality is pretty good. The only thing that need ATI AIW is CPU power.
