Have a friend that just got the NEC 3520a and, without even knowing it existed, came with support for DVD-R dual-layer, having thought, as did I, that dual-layer was only for DVD+R.
As this link below indicates, it turns out that the support came from a firmware upgrade:

Unfortunately, since I have a credit from Dell I have to get my burner from them, since funds are tight right now, but I thought maybe I'd get lucky with a firmware update like my friend did.
Anyone know if there is such an update for the Sony DRU-720A? Any info would be appreciated, thanks...!

"came with support for DVD-R dual-layer"

Whether that burner supports DVD-R dual layer burning or not, as far as I know, there is presently no such thing as DVD-R D/L media...

RE-read your link carefully. At the very bottom it states, "* DVD-R(DL) will be supported by F/W update."

"WILL", not "IS"...
