View Full Version : Backup stucks sometimes / bad quality

Hi,

I'm trying to make DVD backups with the last version of DVDshrink. Everything works fine, and when i watch the movie it seems to work good too... Only sometimes, the DVD stucks or slows down as if it was scrached... It's different with every movie, do you have an idea where it could come from?
Is there a way to test the backup before burning it? And after this, is there a way to test the burned DVD before watching it???
Thanks in advance for your answers.

did you test the very media with a different player/pc?

maybe your standalone player has problems with the media/burnspeed

well it s more or less the same with two different players...

did you try different burn speeds so far?

maybe going for 4x when your media states 8x might be worth a try.

strange thing... When i use DVDshrink i mak a copy at once, i mean that i put the DVD in, ha analyses, decodes, and asks for an empty media to burn... i looked through the options before starting the procedure and i saw the burning speed set to "maximum". I clicked on it to change it as you said but i only had the choice of 8x or 16x... so i didn't do the copy... i just made an ISO file on the HD and i will burn it with nero tonight...

My advice is to burn that ISO with DVD Decrypter. I've seen ppl have problems with Nero even burning ISOs lately.

ok thanks... i have to find a tutorial for DVD decrypter because i have the programm but i don't know it... before i burn, is there a way to check the iso file with another programm? With this i would be sure that the video problems i sometimes have are not coming from the extraction, but from the burning

"Mount" the .ISO image file with DaemonTools and playback - or use ISOBuster...

You could mount the ISO with daemon tools and then run the Phillips Video Verifier over them. But that is a professional product.

This thread (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45238) shows the use of DVD Decrypter. The latter part is relevant - "How do I use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO file ...".

Ok i used DVD Decrypter to burn a movie from an ISO file i earlier created on my HD with DVDshrink... I set the burning speed on 2x and turned on the "verify" option... The DVD was burned, "verify" said everything is ok, and when i watched the movie it was nearly perfect... Still a few errors (which don't stop the movie but are still visible, like huge pixels) occured but thats it... Since the beginning i'm using Sony DVD+R and i think this media is ****ty... A friend of mine used them too and he told me that all the movies he burned have "errors"... Tonight i will burn the same movie in the same conditions from the same iso file but using a Verbatim DVD-R , just to see if there is any difference... Maybe when a DVD copy is made, there will allways be some video bugs?!or not?
I also was thinking, once i'll be a DVD burning god, thanks to you, lol, maybe i'll buy 8 Go Media to have a better video quality on the copy. Will i be able to see the difference ? How do you do it?

Check my sig - how to test your burn. You should do this after every burn. Also look at "Got bad plaback" in my sig.

Bad media usually manifests itself around the edges (towards the latter part of the movie or in the extras if you have done a full disk backup and they are in the latter VTSs).

Do check on media quality in my sig and burner/media compat. Also remember, its no good having media that your burner likes if your player rejects it. You gotta match them all up.

Good luck.

"Maybe when a DVD copy is made, there will allways be some video bugs?!"

Nope - Not with a "clean" original and good quality burnable media...

Further to setarip's comment:

... Providing, if there is compression, it isn't so high so as to introduce visible artifacts into the video stream.

Thanks for your answers... But sorry blutach, i didn't get the last one...

First, you're welcome! :)

What I was saying is that, if, for example, you use DVD Shrink and the compression is high (slider near the left), you run the risk of seeing what are known as "artifacts". These are colour banding, blurriness, fuzzy dots, blocks, or pulsing effects, amongst others.

Doing deep analysis and applying AEC can minimise these effects.

"But sorry blutach, i didn't get the last one..."

Don't feel bad. You're not the first poster who hasn't been able to understand "blutach".

What he/she was trying to point out is that, if you compress your DVD too much, you might create some of what you refer to as "video bugs" (pixelation or little colored boxes, green dots, etc.)

oh ok i see... so if the compression is to high, i might wanna use an 8 Go Media?!
What is the maximum compression you would not go over to be sure to have a nice copy?

blutach

It depends on your system, but I do not go under a bitrate of 3.5Mbps. It is not the compression, per se, but the bitrate devoted to the video.

See here (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45129).

"He's a he."

The "he/she" is the standard reference I use for any poster whom I don't know personally.

"And no need to be narky"

I'm afraid I don't know what this means (Nor do I know what you mean by a "barney". Is that a purple dinosaur?)

"I don't believe I have taken a pot shot at you, sir."

Okayyyy!!!! i begin to see a little light in the darkness... thanks :-)
Nox i really think i should use 8Go Media... Even if it is a little more expensive, i'll be sure to have a good quality...At least if the original DVD was perfect quality...

You're welcome. The alternative would be to split your DVD into 2 DVD-5 disks.

DVDFab is a good choice for this - get it for free at www.mrbass.org/dvdfab/

I have to check the cost difference... I don't like to much to have to change the DVD in the middle of the movie, but i'll have a look.. lol

rnbwsix
7 Apr 2005, 06:36 PM
ok i just saw the price difference is huge...
On an internet site i usually buy the price is lke this :
Verbatim DVD-R 4.7 GO (certified 8x) pack of 10 = 13,80€ or $ if you want... compared to that :
Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5 GO (certified 2.4x) = 12,90€ for ONE!!!!
Additing to this the price of the DVD Box, i can buy the new movie on the internet for the same...lol
So i'll better stay with the 4.7Go Media, lol

Ok i tried new media... Verbatim DVD-R 4.7Go... It's worse... I couldn't even watch the end of the movie... It stucks... Even the timer on my DVD Player has stopped... I burned it with DVD Decrypter at 1x speed...
Not very encouraging...

I had the same problem with frames freezing and went through a big ordeal findind the solution. I wont go into a lot of links and details be will tell you just this

Use only Maxell-r and TDK-r they have a 98% good burn rate.

I went from 3 out of 5 burns bad - to 1 out of 50 bad.

I burn over 100 dvd a month.

I use mainly maxell-r - I get them form office depot when they run sales(two 50 packs for 38$ and such)

If anyone wants my sources just ask.

I hope I can help as many people as I can with this as it has caused be great pain.

some day all dvds will burn the same but now there is a big differece with brands unlike cd-r's which all all pretty much the same.
