View Full Version : Nero Recode and AOpen 1648 AAP/Pro

Just upgraded my OEM version to get full working version of Nero. Have always used DVDShrink for compression and wanted to give Recode 2 a try. Have latest version of Nero and have latest firmware for Rom drive.
Problem: when i open Recode and select a dvd that is in the AOpen drive , i click on video_ts folder and hit ok and pc locks up every time, have tried several different dvds. Tried with anydvd in the background and with nothing in the background running. Recode works fine with my PX716A and SA but not with the AOpen. I can use DVDS, DVDD, Anydvd, Plextools XL with the AOpen, and have for months with no probs. Is there a compatibility problem with Recode and this drive?? I have tired uninstalling the drive and rebooting with no luck.
Any suggestions.

Hi again! :)
Don't know if you have tried this:
Uninstall the Nero package with the uninstall file you can download here: http://www.nero.com/eng/Clean_Tools.html
Run it and restart your PC.
Download the latest files from Nero and after the installation - insert your serial number. Restart your PC.
Is the Aopen regionfree or set to a region? The disc you are feeding it with - commercial and the same region as the reader?

The AOpen is set to region 1, so are the commercial dvd's. I have also tried some of my other previously backed up dvd r's booktyped to dvd-rom. Any disc i try to encode with Nero Recode 2 and this drive locks down pc. I will use this tool to fully remove Nero and try again, but i think i tried that already. I can't see any reason for this drive to have a conflict with Recode, but i had drives not supported by other software in the past. I've past on this info. to Nero in hopes of getting an answer as well.
I guess, i would feel better if i could get varification from another AOpen 1648 AAP/Pro user that uses this software to encode.
This has driven me nuts for 23 days now.

I have some relatives that have an Aopen DVD reader and I faced similar problems once I visited them. They only do CD burnings so I just wanted to show what they could do with a DVD and as I remember it did hang if I inserted a previously burned disc (regionfree) as source in that drive. The burner a Nec 2500 didn't faced those problems reading it as source. I rember I tried the function copy disc to disc option in Nero. I was a little bit short of time so I just used the Nec to transfer the files to the hard disk and then burned them from there.
Later I tried to see if there was a firmware update for that reader but I couldn't really figure out what model it was.
So it could very well be that the Aopen is facing problems in Nero.
The region code was set to 2 for the Aopen and no additional programs running in the background.
Also a full licensed version of Nero.

Okay, i used the Nero cleaning tool, rebooted and reinstalled full version, ran Recode 2 and WahLA it didn't lock up the drive(this was using a dvd r, previously backed up) then i ran a dvd 9 (commercial) and it said it was copy protected, so i started Anydvd 5.1.1.1 and it said it could not find any drives, so i uninstalled anydvd , rebooted and reinstalled it, then ran Recode 2 and it locked up my pc again using this drive, but not with my other drives.
It seems there is a conflict with the AOpen 1648, Nero and Anydvd. Using my other 2 installed drives on this pc, running Recode 2, Anydvd everything works fine............what the hay??
Now i unistall Anydvd again and Recode still locks up pc, with this drive only. So uninstall Nero and reinstall and it works fine, then install anydvd again and this drive locks again, while other drives remain fine with Recode??? I think i'll buy another Rom, for the $30, it's not worth this much time.

Could also try if this program works - it's freeware so you wont loose any money. www.dvd43.com - just have AnyDVD closed while you run it.

You have the latest firmware version 1.02 installed?
ravensheild exp
16 May 2005, 06:55 AM
Yes, all my drives have latest firmware, all software have latest versions.
Just to update my progress, i uninstalled anydvd and nero, then reinstalled nero. Recode works with Aopen on unprotected dvds, then install dvd43 and now recode does not lock up anymore, it will encode any dvd 5 back up, but when i insert a copyprotected disc it gives me a warning that disc is protected??? Now dvd43 is running in the background and should remove this protection, as i have used my other drives with recode and dvd43 with the same disc and it starts the process fine, i also used the copyprotected disc and the AOpen drive with various other softwares (that do not break encryption ) and everything is fine as well. So at least system is not locking up anymore, but there is something strange going on, it seems that Recode and this drive are not compatible when a decryption software is introduced, or in the case of anydvd, if it is on you system at all.
Now i have used this drive for quite some time with DVDShrink and since Recode and Shrink have the same author and Recode is more "up-to-date" then why this issue with Recode and not Shrink??
I can use this drive with dvd43 or anydvd running in the background and use nero express burning rom with no probs, why would Recode have probs and the rest of the Nero software not?

Am i left to wait for a Nero Recode 2 update to address this software problem with this drive?

You could always send a note to the Nero support team - they might have more info about this issue.

Thats what i figured i'd have to do yesterday, so i sent in one then. Just sent another updating my efforts. I will post back their response, as it seems to be a conflict with the drive and others may need answers as well.
Cynthia, thanks for your support and glad to see ya' in the DVDD forum.
They are in need of more bright minds :bglaugh2:

Have email Nero support 3 times over the last 5-6 days about this problem with no assistance given........??
Are they always this difficult to deal with?
When i first submitted this post i had already had the latest version of Nero , so the bug fix wasn't any good for my AOpen.

Just to update, have been going back and fourth with Nero support, they keep telling me that i need to update my drives firmware and i keep telling them i have an AOpen 1648 AAP "PRO"!!! which has only a 1.02 out :smashead: :smashead:
I contacted AOpen and they said it was a software problem.
Would just like a confirmation from someone with this drive and this software.

I just tested this with my new 1648 AAP/Pro and I have the same problem. Everything works fine except Recode. Please give more details of your config.
Here are mine:
- XP Pro SP2
- AMD on Abit NF7-S rev.2, with nForce Driver 5.21
- Aopen 1648 AAP/Pro, 2nd Master, runnning on UDMA 1(!), changing this to UDMA 2 gives me 100% CPU all the time
- Associated drivers: anydvd.sys. asapi.sys, elbycdfl.sys, elbydelay.sys, pxhelp20.sys
I hope there is a solution.

As far as I can see this is a problem between the way Recode accesses the DVD and any Slysoft filter driver. But this is only for the AOpen 1648AAP/Pro.
The only solution I found was to uninstall all Slysoft products and use DVD Region+CSS Free 5.85 instead. I wonder why this works because this tool uses the DVD43 core.
It was not necessary to un-/reinstall Nero, a reboot does it.

I hope this works, will give it a try.
Thanks for the help .
I have tried dvd43 and while it doesn't lock my system up like anydvd it keeps saying that the disc is copyprotected ???
If DVD Region+CSS Free 5.85 uses DVD43 wonder why the conflict with dvd43 in itself?
Would you consider this a firmwre fixable item or a software compatibilty issue? I would like to make whomever aware of it,if they already are not.

@ravenshield:
The AAP/Pro seems to be the only drive with this problem so AOpen should be addressed.
Even with Drive Region+CSS Free it takes longer to access the drive in Nero Recode than with other drives. Why?
I wanted to buy a non Pro AAP and now I know why. But it was impossible to get one anymore.
There still is no RPC1 patch and not even a speedpatch, or am I wrong?
ravensheild exp
22 May 2005, 03:51 AM
Yes, i notice when the disc is loading via Recode it takes twice as long to access it.
There is no other firmware or patch for this drive.
Netwegg.com has the AOpen 1648 AAP (non Pro) Rom, but it is out of stock, i have already been put on the wait list. Is the AAP as fast as the AAP/Pro? This drive is unmatched in rip speed with DL discs.

@ravensh(i)e(i)ld (?)
I have read many forums and it seems the non Pro version is the best drive you can('t) get (I don't even find it at ebay). It is at least of same speed and accuracy. It also has an Audio Play button, a phone jack and a volume tune, so it is more worth the money. Finally you can get patched firmware for it.
I use my Pro for audio rips. There are faster drives for audio extraction but at least the rip quality is 100% and the C2 feature is save. My old Toshiba 1712 was an example of an unsave C2 implementation.
An example rip of an outer disc track (EAC secure/burst):
Liteon 52246S 38.4x/38.4x
AOpen 1648 AAP/Pro 14,5X/31.6x
Benq 1620 Pro 13.0x/29.8x
ravenshield, can you tell me your mainboard chipset? I want to know if the Pro anomaly occurs on all systems. Thank you.

OS: XP Pro SP 2
Mobo: ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe
Processor: Intel 3.6j overclocked to 4.1 GHz
I just use my rom to rip dvds and there is nothing on the market that i'm aware of that rips DL's as fast as this drive.
Here is a listing on ebay for an AOpen 1648 AAP, i just bought one, but they have another 14 for sale. It's a little more than i can get one at Netwegg.com but who knows how long i'd have to wait.

Please update your Nvidia drivers and uninstall any of the Elaborate
Bytes software to assist in this issue.

Isn't this the maker of Anydvd as well?
If so, then why is Nero asking me to uninstall products that do not conflict with there software when using them with another drive, just this specific drive.
Who should i make aware of this problem, Nero or Aopen?
To review: My PX716,PX712,Sony DW22, Pio DVR107 all work with Anydvd and Recode..........the AOpen 1648AAP/Pro does not.
All drives, including the AOpen work with anydvd and DvdShrink or any other burning software i have.
The AOpen does not work with DVD43 and Recode either, yet all other drives do, yet the AOpen works with DVD3 and any other burning or encoding engine.
The AOpen "DOES" work with DVD Region+CSS Free and Recode and this is the only combination that i'm aware of.
So, who should i complain to? I am using a trial version of DVD Region+CSS Free and hate to buy to full version when i have AnyDVD already or can use DVD43 as well.

I have the same problem. Its Nero's fault.I've emailed them but they never have an answer to solve it.The same happens with ASUS DVD-ROM's aswell.
Nero have lost me as a customer.Bugs, bugs and more bugs and bloated. You would have thought they would have fixed them by now but in each release there is always more bugs added. No support,I think they are becoming ignorant now that they have made millions and millions of dollars.
I now use DVDDecrypter to rip,DVDShrink to recode to an ISO and burn with Decrypter, always with perfect results.I also use burnatonce for audio and data CD's.Its file size is small, its powerful(Uses the great cdrdao app for burning) and reliable.

I suppose misery loves company... well it would appear that I'm in the same boat as you folks. My new ASUS drive w/ the latest and greatest firmware causes Recode to lockup as soon as a DVD is placed in the drive. To confirm that it was indeed the drive that was causing the problems I popped in another drive (in this case an LG drive) w/ out changing any of the softare settings and the problem went away.
Also, it was possible to read the DVD from my BenQ DVD +/-RW drive with no issue before and after the ASUS drive was installed.
Looks like a problem with Nero recode.
