System crash when converting avi to mpeg 2 / dvd

Hi,

I just can't convert a avi (Xvid / Divx) to a mpeg 2 or dvd file without my system rebooting within a few minutes...

I've tried using every thinkable conversion program from winavi to Procoder 1 and 2 to DVDsanta but my system just crashes a few minutes into the conversionproces.

I did a system format yesterday and reinstalled XP with all the latest Xvid and Divx Pro codecs but the problem is still there.

I've checked all my hardware and even changed most of it in the past months (memory, videocard, MoBo, case + powersup.) but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone help?

PS auto-reboot is switched off, but the system still resets completely, so no memory dump is beeing made, so I can't check what or where something goes wrong.

Hi Webslinger and welcome to the forums :-)
Are you overheating by any chance? Do you still reset with the side of the case removed?
Is it the one file you are trying to use?
Among your numerous applications, have you tried TMPGEnc?

Nope, no overheating.
I've got a Coolermaster case with two XL coolingfans and a good quality Coolermaster processor cooler.

My case stays around 35 degrees Celcius (max, often cooler) and my processor doesn't go above 50 degrees Celcius at maximum use.

My power supply is allso very stable, it's a Enhance 400 watt.

So I don't think the problem is in overheating.

And I didn't use TMPGEnc for a while, so I could give it a try again, but it also used to crash on me.

Maybe the problem has something to do with the fact that the movies I try to convert are mostly Xvid and not DivX... Which Xvid codec do you have installed? I've tried Koepi's latest stabel release and a few others.
Or could the movies just be badly encoded? (but they play fine...)

By the way, I will try TMPGEnc again, but shouldn't my other programs at least work?

does it happen with numerous avi files or with only one in particular?

I've tried a few...

Shrek 1, Shrek 2, Robots, Star wars.

The funny thing with Shrek was that I got it converted eventually, it crasht three times (even close to the end, very frustrating) and finaly it worked.
But it must have bin a fluke, 'cause everything after that crasht.

I've found a good workaround for my conversion problems...

I've bought a Haupauge tv card (wintv-pvr-150), hooked up my modded XboX and now I record my avi's in realtime with allmost no cpu usage (card has a build in mpeg 2 decoder / encoder).

And I must say, the results are great!
And the card only cost me 59 euro's (new, OEM)

Just one aditional question: does anyone know if the Haupauge card has macrovision protection (haven't hooked up a dvd or vcr yet) an if yes if there is a way to disable it?

if this is a new system could it be over-clocked? all this stuff happened to me once and was determined that the store messed up by over-clocking it....

here's one:

it could be corrupted frames....

Or it could also be the video codecs not installed correctly or maybe the conversion program just didnt initialise them properly.

BTW... I hate amd's.... it could be that lol

btw to the poster upstairs (one post above me) - good choice on the hauppauge card! I LOVE them.. been using it for 6 years now... fantastic stuff and always get perfect results everytime... a few of the forum members have seen my work and have been stunned :)

and no it doesnt have macrovision - some do but that comes with the drivers of hauppauge (as confirmed by hauppauge themselves...)
