Xvid with AC3 audio to Dvix with mpeg-layer3

I have a few Xvid movies that have "What Im assuming to be" an AC3 audio stream. I wasnt able to play them with sound untill one of your members helped me out with the ac3filter. But my philips Dvix/DVD player wont play them, And it will play just about any file I put in it, My question is, is there a way to convert the Xvid AVI file with the goofy audio stream "192 kbps" to Dvix with a MPEG Layer-3 audio codec?

Open it in virtualdub.
Select Video, compression, choose divx.
Select Audio, fullprocessing, then Audio, compression, choose MP3.
Click File, save avi.

hello again, shock :)

as most standalone dvd players that can play divx can also play xvid, there is probably no need to 'convert to divx'. all you need to do is convert the audio to mp3. this can be done (quite easily) by:

1. download & install "virtualdubmod", then run it

2. open the video file

3. under "video" select "direct stream copy"

4. under "streams" select "stream list"

5. right-click the audio stream that pops up in the new window, and click "compression"

6. in the left column, select "mp3" or "mpeg 1 layer 3" (if you cannot see this, search for an mp3 codec in google). in the right column, select the bitrate (i suggest 192kbps, 48000khz)

5. keep clicking "ok" till you get back to the main window.

6. under "file" click "save as avi". burn your movie and enjoy :)

Before I installed the AC3 filter vdub was the only app I had that would play the movie. Now that I installed the AC3 filter everything plays it but vdub, and after going threw your instructions and saving the movie as an AVI with the dvix codec and mpeg-layer3 for the audio it tells me that thier is no compressor for the audio and vdub cant even play the movie with sound, Should I just uninstall the AC3 filter so vdub can play it with sound like before? Or can I even do that?

yeah just install that, and it will allow you to encode ac3 into whatever you want :)

i have never needed that file, as i do all my encoding through gordian knot and besweet...

As a point of information, although the Philips DivX/DVD player (probably the 642P. I have one) is generally capable of playing XviDs, it cannot play XviDs that have been created with some of the special features available via the XviD codec, most notably QPELs (quarter pixels, if I remember correctly). I'd guess that many other comparable standalone players have similar limitations regarding XviD-compressed .AVI videos...
