Mpeg to Avi = no sound

Hi!

I'm a total newbie to this, so I'm hoping you guys could help; I've transferred my old homevideo-tapes to the computer and they turned out as very large Mpeg-files (some cut in 2GB-pieces due to length/size). I'd like to convert them to (smaller) .avi's and then join them together again.

I've tried Virtual Dub, but it didn't accept my mpeg's. Now I'm trying EasyX Video Converter wich is easy indeed and works fine, except the new avi's don't have sound! I've got AC3 and Radium MP3 installed. What am I doing wrong? :(

Use VirtualDubMOD (Different than the standard VirtualDub)...

Thanks! I've got VirtualDubMod and now I'm trying to figure out how it works. Any good beginners guide on the Internet available, maybe?

I've managed to convert a file to .avi, but it doesn't play smoothly at all; the sound & the video both freeze and then skip forward all the time... I also have the feeling that the quality of the picture isn't quite as good as the original. Does this have to do with the fact that I have a crappy old computer, or do I need to change some settings? :o

1) What software are you using for playback?

2) Does the original MPEG playback any better?

I use Windows Media Player 10 for everything I do, really, and it doesn't have any problems at all playing the original mpeg's (or other avi's for that matter). I'm thinking there must be something interfering with the converting proces?

what are your computer specs?

try the tool from

recommend you to select divx as output format, so the created file will be smaller.
