Questions transcoding mp42 to xvid

Greetings!

I recentrly bought a Mediagate MG-25 (http://www.airlinktek.com/english/prod_mg25.htm) and I was really excited when I got it, but quickly became disappointed when I tried to play my mpeg4v2 encoded files. NOT SUPPORTED! Who wouldnt include mpeg4v2 playback on a mpeg4/divx/xvid playback device?!

Anyway, I fired off an email to the company to fix it in the next firmware release, but until then I want to transcode some of my favorite files so I can watch them on this device. So heres the deal, I want to know the best way to setup the xvid codec in VirtualDub so I can retain as much quality as possible.

The originals are mpeg4v2 encoded at 480x360, these are DAP releases if you're familiar with them. I used the default AS @ L5, single pass, and I wasn't all that impressed with the results (don't know if I'm being too picky). I was pleased that they play but I think I'm losing quality.

Any suggestions??

Simply use a "FOURCC" converter program to change the "FOURCC" to "DIV3" in the file header...

Attempted doing that using Nic's FourCC changer. No good, attempted several varieties with no luck.

So it would seem transcoding is my only option. Any other suggestions?

Be good enough to:

1) Load the FOURCC-modified video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

I assume I changed the fourcc's correctly, I tried doing DIV3/MP42, but that wouldnt work either. So I did this, it plays under WMP but the video is crazy distorted, the audio plays fine. Dosent play at all in the Mediagate.

Your second image indicates that you entered a FOURCC of something other than "DIV3" (which is the code for the DivX v.3.11 alpha codec), perhaps "DX50", that is being recognized as the DivXPro v.5.1.1 codec...

But do you have the DivX v.3.11alpha codec installed on your system?

If not, I'm fairly certain that doing so will cure things regarding playback on your PC. As to the Mediagate, it might be time to contact the manufacturer for further insight...

Are you CERTAIN that the original file was an mpeg4v2-encoded .AVI and not XviD-encoded, perhaps including the QPel function?

Would you please be good enough to post a "File Information" screengrab of the ORIGINAL (NOT converted FOURCC) .AVI?
