View Full Version : Problem playing videos since new Harddrive

I recently got a bigger, internal harddrive. I kept the old one for storing my videos (.avi & .mpeg).
Since the change, the new hd works fine. But the original hd will not play videos anymore. It worked before. But now my videos stutter & freeze my pc. This is disappointing.
Any suggestions?

did you use the new hard drive for your os ? If so you will probably have to re-install the codecs. Also check to make sure dma is enabled for the hard drive. control panel>system> hardware> device manager>ide controllers>advanced settings

Hi Tigerman,
Thanks for your reply. I don't know what dma is but I followed your instructions and it is enabled on both hd's.
What is os?
How do I know what codec's I need or what to install?

Hello Marcie,
I would install these two codec's as for they are mostly required to view video's.
Even if these are not the codec's you need for all the files you will be ready for any
video that does require these.
DivX - http://www.afreecodec.com/details.php?file=39
3ivX - http://www.afreecodec.com/details.php?file=34

In order to determine which codec is required to view your video, you must use a video tool.
Here is two video tool's which are easy to use.
afreeCodecVT - http://www.afreecodec.com/afreecodecvt.php
Gspot - http://www.afreecodec.com/details.php?file=32
Hope this information comes in hand.

Afreecodec,
Hello & thanks.
I installed Dvix. I also tried Gspot. I'm not sure how to read the results.
It said DirectShow should play my files. And something about dvsd and DV Video Codec.
I went to 4CC and looked for those. I linked to Media Concept for their free trial download of DV Encoder. I installed that but nothing has helped so far.
This is frustrating because this HD worked fine when it was my primary. It still plays .mpeg's fine. Just not DV AVI's. Since I now have 2 HD's, do I need separate codec's? If they are installed and work on my primary, shouldn't they work for my secondary too?
More info:
I have a 2004 Dell, Pentium IV, Windows XP
My videos were created with Pinnacle 9.

Thanks again. I should have known what os meant. That shows how naive I am to this stuff. But I'm learning and appreciate the help.
But I'm still alittle confused. The same codecs should work for both my hd's?
