trying to play a file in windows media player 7.1 audio only, went to see properties for the file in windows explorer when I choose preview said decompressor not found "vids:divx" I never heard of this codec can you help

Seems that you will need to have 4.x/5 installed. Have you got 3.11 installed as well?

I have downloaded 4.x when I try to configure the codec I get a rundll error and this program will be shut down

Try using other players instead, like WMP6.4 or PowerDivx or the Playa.

windows media works fine with the 4.x codec, but the divx player that came with the bundle does not work, I tried and the first time my machine frooze.

the video is now playing in windows media player, but it's a bit choppy (once every ten sec)so I try again to configure codec 4.x I get the error rundll, so I close it and go back to the player resume the movie, it's running ok now, so far played ten min with no choppiness!!!!?????

Try a less cpu intensive player such as GDIVX (reduce resolution to 640x480 and 16 bit color). I believe the rundll error indicates that you need to upgrade your directx.

The rundll error is a known problem, it's mentioned on the Divx site under their know errors list. They say that it will still let you configure the codec, but crashes as you exit the configuration screen.

Thx Matt, Batman, I have the latest directx 8.something and I do not with to play a video at 16 colors!!??, what's the point then, I will try a less intensive player and get back to you.

16 bit color will also improve performance (in fact it'll make a big change). It's nothing scary :) That's what I do all the time.

Don't frighten yourself unnecessarily - "16Bit color" provides up to 65,536 colors, NOT just 16 colors ;>}

I see now that I mis-read 16 colors versus 16bits. yes I will do that. Thx for your help
