Video codecs problem. :(

Hi all
I have been without my pc for over a year so I apologise for my absence.......I'm sure I was missed! :-p lol
I promise I searched the forums first but I am prepared to accept that I may have missed a similar post along the way.......there's a lot to catch up on! :(
Anyway I really need help now with my new pc setup! I am having problems playing videos that worked fine in my old pc & also in other people's in the interim! The colour is really bad, glaring & bleeding! My graphics card works fine with games etc.
I remembered that when I had problems a long time back it was because I had too many codecs & they were conflicting so I have a suspician that this is the same!
I am running winxp with sp1 & I think a lot of the codecs were included in it & with the windows updates. I run videolan (for almost everything) & windvd (for the dvd player) I have separately installed the ac3 codec the divx codec & the xvid codec.......no bundles.
I used Gspot & videoinspector to check each video & no missing codecs so I am pretty sure its a conflict of too many codecs!! :confused:
There are 126 codecs/filters etc listed in GSpot as being installed so please can anyone tell me how I can safely delete the codecs that are installed & which basic ones I should reinstall? :eek:

At the moment I am seriously contemplating a reformat as my sound seems to be wrong now as well........keeps failing! (probably another codec prob......lol)

the best suggestion is FFDSHOW imho

uninstall your present codecs and install ffdshow

thank you UncasMS but do you mean that I should delete all of the codecs that are in that list?? Is it safe? Will it affect the OS itself??

well i normally prefer clean environments but you might as well install ffdshwo without uninstalling any of the codecs

make sure that ffdshow will be assigned as playbackfilter (possible during installation)

you can use codec sniper to identify the codecs and see if any are broken. be carefull deleting the codecs as some software may not work. VLC (videolan) is an excellent free player that uses it's own codecs

i have a MEDION pretty advanced hyperthreading computer..have burnt/encoded/ripped dvds for years, but i can't seem to get anything to work to get some DIVX and ALL XVID movie files to not have a green screen during playback...have installed latest divx & xvid codecs, have NIMO codec pack, etc.....is there anything i can install/work on here to get these to play, so as to get them to work in TMPGENC so i can burn them to dvd...i'm at a loss

terryjoebob..........I had problems previously when I used the nimmo codec bundle & after advice from here I deleted it & never installed any bundle codecs again! lol the individual codecs are much safer & cause less conflicts! Having said that of course I am having codec probs now but I think its most likely related to something bundled with a software prog! :(

Thank you all. I have reformatted & now have only 107 codecs lol
It still seems a lot to me but they all came with programmes, no extras from me! :smile:
All my multimedia is now working just fine, pictures are clear & sound is permanently resident!

i have windows media encoder but it wont do it - says something about missing codec.
