back a few years ago they made divx/dvd players. would divx burned to a cd work in one of those?

Did they? Or were you referring to the long-dead DIVX company?

yes, rca and a bunch of others made them back around 95-97

The two of them have nothing to do with each other and I doubt their technology have anything in common, so you won't be able to play DivX videos in those players. But if you happen to have one of them, it never hurts to try and report your findings here. ;)

What you are referring to is the short-lived Circuit City Divx format. Other than the great "similarity" in names (DivX;-] is not "Divx") the codec now in use has nothing in common with that now-dead format.
