cant get divx 5.0 files to play

ok, I have downloaded a few .avi files that supposedly need
divx 5.0 to play, but all i get is a blank screen, no matter what
player i attempt to use....
anyone have any ideas, since it seems alot of encoders are starting to use divx5.0 already?

Obvious question - Do you have the DivX v.5.0 codec installed?

yes I have the 5.0 codec installed

Load on eof the files into VirtualDub. From under the "File" drodpown menu, select "File Information". Post EVERYTHING (video and audio) listed, or post a screen grab .jpg graphic of the information box...

I'm kinda new to this video stuff, so I don't understand what you meant when you say "Load on eof the files into VirtualDub."

if I knew what to do I can grab a screen shot no prob.

Are you certain that these are divx 5.0 files, not divx 3.11 or divx 4.x files?

I would try to uninstall divx 5.0, and then try divx 3.11

I think the problem may lie in the files themselves.

I downloaded a sample clip from divx.com that needed divx5.0 and it worked fine.

I guess some of the people out there that are creating the files ( The Panic Room) are messing something up on thier end.

I'm afraid that you've just been exposed to the disappointments inherent in downloading, rather than creating your own, videos. You can never be certain of the quality of what you'll get, or even if you're getting a legitimate video file (some folks create phony files, just to aggravate downloaders).

For future reference, VirtualDub is a free and excellent video editing software product, which you can download from (among others) DivXDigest.com ;>}
