I'm sure some of you, like me turn off auto-updates. I hate things running in the background, it's my PC dammit! I'll run the update when I feel like it. Anyway I just read that m$ released some pretty significant patches yesterday for IE, DirectShow and the MSDTC and COM+ services. 9 security patches in all, 3 to fill some critical security holes. Here's the link (http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci1133179,00.html) that gives the gory details.

There are patches for everything from Win98 to Win server 2003, so I'd strongly suggest everyone to hit the windows update site and keep their system secure.

I turn off auto updates installation but leave the notification on in XP Pro so I at least get notified, then go and install what I choose.

i recently turned off the auto updates too, every bloody time it would install and reboot my pc when i have a 7-8 hour project encoding overnight. now i have to select to download and install. it hasn't asked for a re start yet, is it required on these?

you should restart, whether it tells you to or not ;)

i should do a lot of things...like defrag my pc more than once every 5 months!;)

The updates I did stated restarting was needed, but I always do it anyway also.

The auto downloading and installation of the updates is the reason I turned off auto updates and just left the notification on. At least this way I get notified and can get them when I want.

Unfortunately, dedicated mission critical computers(our video ones)
shouldn't be allowed on the internet, just do a clean install of xpsp2,
tweak, add drivers, essential programs, defrag and watch how well
everything works and stays working. IE about crashed my main work
box, too much googling. I have a couple more(my better ones) that
will not get contaminated. Unless absolutely necessary NEVER let
MS update your drivers.

I do the same as did an update last night.

were you prompted for a re-start? was anyone NOT, after doing the update? i've since re-started but never was asked---different updates perhaps? i only skimmed the list.

I was warned. The computer was being switched off for the night anyway. I did a custom selection and didn't download the office XP patch (I use openoffice) and the MS spyware tool.

Thanks for the info guys. But IIRC, you don't have to select "Restart". Just close, finish what you're doing and restart at your convenience to make the updates "take".

True, as I mentioned thats why I just get the notification for updates and do them when I want to and select the updates I choose to install. No sense installing an update for something I don't use. That's why I pick and choose and don't let M$ do the installing when it wants to and what it wants to. I get the notification they are available and go get/install 'em when I want to.

i never install any updates, only very important ones like the 'blaster worm' one a couple of years ago :P and also a fix for digital tv cards. other than that, i stick with service packs only :D

all those 'security holes' have never affected me before, so i can't be bothered...

I am concerned about the new update spike that checks your software. I had read about a way to block info but don't know where anyone know what I mean. something in IE.( I am not concerned because I have Pirate stuff just don't like the snooping they do.) the new name of big brother is Microsoft.

there's a neat tool in IE sp2(XP) that manages browser addons,
there are several questionable things that get added to IE you might
want to disable.
