if the "Num Lock" key is on try it with it off. For some reason my keyboard sometimes acts up with the "Num Lock" key on.
Have you got the correct keyboard layout?
It sounds like you have a US keyboard and got UK layout.

how long has this been happening?
it could very well be time for a new keyboard, or maybe even a virus, especially if its only the '@' key this happens with (it seems like something of a 'practical joke' of a virus if this is the case)...

Does your typing ever seem delayed, even a little?

Since you obviously use P2P, I would suspect a stealthy virus/trojan/malware.
I scan from safe mode using fully updated norton's, spybot AND trojanhunter.
It's a royal pain and a lenghty process. And I just found out that windows can hide values in the registry, GREAT!
Nowdays you can get infected with a keylogger just by going to the wrong
webpage and saying yes, not no. It starts as a trojandownloader, then
builds from there.

as i asked in my previous post, how long has this been happening? maybe you coujld try a 'system restore' if its recent?
and you probably have already done so, but check for spyware/adware
i'm not sure whether you have a firewall installed. get one if you don't already have one. (the windows xp sp2 firewall does not count, and should not be taken seriously. i could probably write a better one in a few minutes :P ).

I don't think its a trojan or anything because it was like this when I first installed windows.

If you did a clean install of windows, not a repair disk?
Booted to cd, or reinstalled from hard drive(hidden partition).
I have had installs of windows glitch and had to redo them.

could very well be a hardware problem, possibly the motherboard...
check for bios updates

Also is it a ps2 or usb keyboard? Whichever try to borrow the other kind and try it on your mobo! Might isolate the problem/hardware/software wise.

its not the motherboard port causing the problem, as both usb/ps2 do the same thing. looks like a software/config problem now. i'm still thinking its a setting in windows...

First I would try going into device manager and uninstalling it then rebooting,
what's your OS? How long has it been up and running?

Follow the instructions here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/honeycutt_03april28.mspx) and check your keyboard layout. My keyboard shows English US and has the Dvorak layout and shift 2 is @. There are also Dvorak left hand and Dvorak left hand

That is what I was talking about when having the wrong layout for the keyboard. I have a US Keyboard and can shift between US and UK layouts.

I have the very same problem with my keyboard, the function of @ and " is reversed, I just got on with life as it was, minor glitches don't bother me that much. But just by chance I came across this article and followed the same thread and "YES" I to am cured of this glitch.
I can tell you that mine started after I reloaded XP in the non distructive way. I guess the default load settings are in Yank, but I don't remember being prompted to alter these..although with all those additional patches to download and add, anything could have gone wrong.
"""""'@@@@ all in the right places.
