AMD computer for editing

Hi, my friend just bought an AMD computer to get involved with video editing. I noticed in another recent post here ( Ididn't wanna hijack it) that you were talking about AMD. My friend asked me what his new computer's performance equaled to by comparison to Intel. I have absolutely no idea what the AMD numbers mean, and I wonder if someone would be kind enough to offer a rough comparison.

here is the computer ... an athlon 64 3700+ 1meg L2cache, 2.2g speed and 2000mhz bus. 1gig ram.

Ida just stuck the web address in here from circuit city but it wouldn't let me. Anyway, I don't know if it's their number or HPs number but its A1230n.

amd's naming scheme was made to compare to intel's products back when intel was on top. performance varies depending on software, but i'd imagine it's equivalent is around the intel 660 (3.6GHz) and maybe the 670 (3.8GHz). if it were me, i'd stick with the athlon.

here's a couple of benchmarks, it doesn't have the 3700+, but it has the 3800+ which is quite close, so the info should be accurate enough :)

your friend's machine is more than decent and almost top of the range in terms of *horsepower* and definitely it consumes less power than a p4

ready, maybe another gig of ram if he decides to upgrade to the next

Hmm.. well maybe you have me converting now ... LOL ... as a die hard Intel nut, I have always made my number 2 priority chipset mfg. There are a few chipset mfg's that make me shiver just to hear the name.

In the AMD world, I'm sure there are choices also for chipset mfgs. What is the mfg, and style of choice guys?

nvidia's nforce/nf 4 is fine (though drivers are not perfect)
nfoce3 and 2.5 are a bit older but that doesnt make them inferiour

via's k8t800 and k8t890 pro are other contestants
