avi is a containerformat that may contain different codecs for video and audio streams

you shouldnt convert the avi just because you're missing the correct codec for playing back the video content

search google for FFDSHOW (go for a new version) and install it

that should do the trick - it's the best playbackfilter i could think of

.avi file is a video file. It could be a short video clip, a movie trailer, or a entire movie.

To properly play some .avi files, you need both "audio" and "video" codecs. Apparently, you have the right "audio" codec, cause you hear sound. You just need to find the right "video" codec.

You can download this free tool called "GSpot", which will tell you what codecs you need to play it. - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Edit: Darn you UncasMS! :D

can you convert an avi file to another file type? lets say to a cdr or dvd+r if it is an important file.

See http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56454. The search function works well here!
