I am having a problem. I used to have a Plextor Px-716A, then the tray broke and I bought the same one. Ever since I had this new one my read speed and burn speed have been slower. I used to burn at 4x now it only burns at 1.6x and reads at about 2.5X. My other dvd drive also reads slower (not the burner). I have done everything I can think of. Updated my firware, Checked my Primary and Secondary IDE channels making sure they were on DMA if available and Ultra DMA Mode, tried adjusting my read/burn speeds with dvdd. I don't think it's just a problem with the burner because like I said before my problem is also affecting my Dvd drive ,when I read with that as well. Any help would be fantastic.

Yes I have backed up about 30 movies since I have gotten the new burner, and they all write and read very slowly.

Doesn't Plextor have riplock on it? Find a firmware without riplock - see link in my signature (or did your firmware update include a riplock free firmware?) If this is the case, check your IDe cables.

I got the most recent firmware upgrade from Plextor's site. Then I read through all the previous upgrades of the firware and it never metioned anything on riplock. I saw all this here > http://www.plextor.com/english/support/downloads/firm_716old.htm
Where else could I find an upgrade for this burner without riplock?? Because I really don't think there is a problem with my IDE cables.

Get the 1.09 here (http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1974) and see if that helps.

"burns at 1.6x "
don't sound like firmware
don't see how it could be anything but pio mode
might be a good idea to run the selfdiagnostic

Unfortunitly that did not help. My burner still reads and writes at 1.6x and my regular dvd drive still reads at 2.5x. I have no clue what's going on. Do you think installing any other programs could have affect this? I used to burn with Nero, but now I only burn with Decrypter. Could updating Nero changed any settings. The only software I have installed recently on my computer has been Updating to the latest Nero, installing ImgBurn, installing Menu Shrink, and installing pgcedit. However, I was still having my problem before installing any of these. Here are my IDE ATA/ATAPI controller readings (I think everything is set right, but here they are anyways). I have 2 Primary and 1 secondary. Primary 1- { Device 0} Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5 {Device 1} Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable. Primary 2- {Device 0} Transfer Mode: Dma if available Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5 {Devide 1} Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable. Secondary- {Device 0} Transfer Mode: Dma if available Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode {Device 1} Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode.

Bingo!
"Secondary- {Device 0} Transfer Mode: Dma if available Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode {Device 1} Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode."

ok for my Secondary i was able to fix my {Device 0} it now reads Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current transfer Mode: Ultra DMA mode 2, so that one is good. My Dvd reader drive now reads fine. The one I am stilling having trouble with is my {Divice 1} which is probibly my burner. It still reads Transfer Mode: Dma if avaible Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode. I have uninstalled it and reset many times, but still no fix. What should I do from here?

Your burner does not like being slaved to the dvd reader. Disconnect the reader and attach the burner to the end of the cable and change jumper to master.
Why?, well the new plex probably has a newer firmware,
just guessing.
I always had my plex 708 and 712 master by themselves.

So basicly your saying to unhook my dvd reader and use the burner alone for writing/reading? Is that what you mean by master?

It's slightly more than that. You need to take your PC apart and transfer the burner to where the reader is on the IDE cable and set it to MA (master) on the back of the burner.

Just to confirm that this is the problem, the reader might not cause problems
being slaved to the burner. Understanding master/slave designations
is a prerequsite to adding/removing/replacing drives.

Alright, thanks for your help guys. I made the burner the master and now the reader is slave to the burner and is the one in pio mode. The only reason I don't want to use my burner to read and burn is because that is how 2 of my last 3 burners have broken. But I am happy because at least I can burn at 4x again. Thanks Again

with good burners so CHEAP
there's little point in even using a dvd-rom or combo(dvd-rom/cd burner) unless you
COF(copy on the fly)
-----reasons------
more drain on power supply
conflicts
degraded read/write performance from sharing ide cables

I just went through this problem myself.
Go on Google and do a search under "Changing DMA Mode." You'll find that you can go in and edit the Registry (be careful) and doing so fixes the problem. My Plextor PX-716A was running PIO and it's now running Ultra DMA Mode 3.
You can swap IDE cables around and flip-flop the Master-Slave relationship, but the Plextor folks said that this drive should work fine in either status. I've also read that you can also uninstall and then reinstall the IDE channel with the DVD burner - just make sure you don't uninstall the IDE channel with the bootable hard drive on it.
But the least messy way is to edit the Registry. I go into Advanced Settings periodically and make sure that the IDE channel is in DMA Mode. Otherwise, +-Rs coasters will result.
Also make sure to NOT install Intel Application Accelerator.
All of the above advice is what I picked up from other people on this and other forums. I don't want to take credit for somebody else's solution.

If you follow the link below and scroll past all the hot fixes, registry tweaks
and updates there is a WORKAROUND that could not be simpler, faster or less risky:
Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the IDE controller
in question. Reboot and let XP reinstall the driver-- complete with default
DMA settings.
This default often gets changed after the drive has had trouble reading a damaged disc...
which is exactly what had happened to me the day before my troubles began.
The troubles went away after I tried this trick.
