I was thinking of getting a Phillips DivX DVD player, but i was wondering:

A) do these things play XviD?
B) do the files have to be burned on DVD-Rs? Or can they be put on CD-Rs?

C) do my questions depend on the specific model of player?
Thanks in advance.

1. yes, as long as the xvid file in question hasn't been encoded with certain features (like qpel and gmc)

2. they can be on DVD or CD

3. not really, most divx certified stuff plays xvid, as well as CD/DVD

Anything that is DivX certified will play XviD that is encoded with a Home Theatre profile, anything else and it might not. Same goes for DivX though.

Really though if you mean the 642 it uses an ESS chipset which probably offers the worst ASP support and therefor the worst XviD decoding support.

MPEG-4 part 2 is MPEG-4 part2, doesn't matter if it is XviD, DivX, libavcodec, Nero Digital, HDX4, 3ivX, skal's or whatever.

try it out on a cd-rw/dvd-rw and see if it plays.

if the file does have qpel/gmc, you can re-encode it, without those features, and it'll play
