Quality-4 Hr; LiteOn(anyDVD Recdr) Vs. PC

How is it my LiteOn 5005 can put 4 hours of video on one disc with no (or very little) noticeable loss in quality , yet various methods I've tried on PC video editing software produces very pixelated video?

I can create simple menus only on the LiteOn , but like the creativity offered by PC software. Using Pinnacle Studio 9 , and tried shrinking 2-2hr. discs first (made from VHS tapes).....then authoring and burning.
Also tried copying the 2 hr. discs to HD (4G+ each) / importing the vobs to .mpg movie files using Studio / author-burn to 8G+ vob's / then "burn to 1 disc" using InterVideo DVD Copy.
Either way produced about identical results. Grainy at full screen , especially quicker motion scenes.

point taken & i fully agree with your results (mine's not a liteon)

imho, these stand-alone recorders have a well designed a2d converters which better compensate the compressions applied. the only downfall is the audio isn't a standard ac3 output :(

If not too complex to answer....whats a2d. Also, have you ever dealt with DVDShrink? Wondering why 'Shrink will not process the vob sets from my LiteOn produced DVDs, which have that extra "VR" folder. Sometimes that folder is not created ?, perhaps if I have not done a lot of menus while copying my VHS tapes to disc? Then I think DVDShrink will accept the vobs, etc. (obviously 'Shrink worked for me with files from the 2 discs in my orig. post above)

a2d = analog to digital

never was faced with an extra vr folder. i don't own a liteon. sorry :(

dvdshrink & all other simular progs work fine with my stand-alone recordings :)

Mr. E'Mentor , thanks again. That extra folder is not uncommon. I've read many millions of pixels on it in many forums...and others having same problems using DVDShrink.
BTW , I just did took a single a2d (listen to me!) from family tape, created menus , minor edits , using Pinnacle Studio. Made DVDs and gave out to other family members. It turned out great, as contained only 2 hours of video.

I took a 2 disk set of "Gone With The Wind" (4 hrs) and got excellent quality
with high compression and shrink, the key was choosing the orignal mono soundtrack. Settop recorders don't have the sound overhead of 5.1, shrink cannot compress sound streams, as video length increases 5.1 sound
starts to take up too much space and video suffers.
A TV series with stereo sound is much more compressable than our 5.1
movies. All about math.

i've heard of those "vr folders" appearing with certain recorders, & i think there is a work-around for that.
i also have a "6 hour" recording setting, but until i'm bored crapless, i won't try it ;)

Greetings, I also have a Liteon (nice piece of kit). I encountered the same problems as you trying to use DVDShrink. I burned a movie with my Liteon and wanted to tidy it up by removing some crap from the start/middle/end using the start/end frame function in Shrink. Now I know (for the time being) I'm stuck with the commercials in the middle but I managed to use DVDShrink without getting the vob error message! To do this I transferred the movie recorded on my Liteon to my Hard drive using DVD Decrypter. I then opened the files on my hard drive using DVDShrink and it worked without error messages. I assume the Liteon does something to the actual disk and DVDShrink does not like what it's seeing. Either that or DVD Decrypter is removing whatever is preventing DVDShrink from opening the movie from the disk.

So transfer from the disk to hard drive using DVD Decrypter, then open files on hard drive with DVD Shrink.

I did wonder if the extra folder had something to do with finalizing the disk for use in other players/PC. I wondered if you opted for a quick finalize on the Liteon whether the folder would be present/whether you could open the disk via Shrink. Haven't tested my theory yet cause I was satisfied with the work around.

Shrink doesn't like it because it is DVD VR (video recording). You need software such as TMPGEnc DVD Author to read the DVD's. As, the files are on a single layer, you don't need Shrink (unless you are compressing the contents of more than one disc onto one disc).

I use mpeg-vcr to edit out adverts. Then import the mpg into DVD Author.
