Please Help!!!

very recently i have downloaded a avi video. it played perfectly fine, but when i converted it to MP4, the sound got off after the first 20 minutes, and its a 3 hour video. can anyone help me solve this problem?

demux the audio/video
encode the audio/video separately
mux the audio/video

the audio/video usually gets out of sync by changing the fps when re-encoding
what software/steps did you use

usually i use Videodora ipod converter, but i also tried using 3GP_Converter
im about to try using Xillisoft
whats a mux or demux?
