Is there a good free tool to make if possible to watch my divx/xvid files on a standard DVD player - not one that can play divx already (then I wouldn't need a tool :-)

free I like Dvd2svcd
best=convert with a dedicated mpeg encoder such as Mainconcept or Tmpgenc, author with Tmpgenc dvd Author or similiar

Yes, so if I want to put my divx files on a DVD and play it on a DVD that, well, only plays DVD.

I tried tmpgenc, but I must be doing something wrong - was going to take 15 hours or so to convert 2 divx files to DVD files.

the reason i asked is because many dvd players support VCD playback, and you didn't mention the media you were using. what are the specs of your pc? tmpgenc is a high quality encoder that takes time. surely you can do other things while it encodes;)

btw to convert to dvd with tmpgenc isn't free, and if you say it's saying 15 hrs for VCD template...something is amiss.

Mpeg template - or ntsc DVD template to be exact, I think.

My comp. - I'm using my laptop with has a Pent. M @ 2.13 and 2GBs of DDR2 - it's a fairly new XPS Gen2

I own a copy of Tmpgenc xpress 3. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

when you use the program above, does it actually give you video_ts & audio_ts files to burn to a dvd?

TMPGEnc is an encoder, you need a DVD authoring program like DVD lab pro to convert the video, audio files into a proper DVD.

look at your rate control mode in that screenshot loopyloops. you have VBR selected it's a 2 pass long encode. if you want to cut down encode time i'd select CBR. also: encode mode: you have a high setting. choose a lower one. this should be the same setting as motion search precision on tmpgenc plus, and i have yet to encounter anyone or see myself any difference between the different seetings with motion search precision.. experiment and see for yourself if you want. these 2 things will lower the encode time greatly.

Thanks!! Good info :-)

Do I assume correctly that my comp. has enough juice to do such things?

you have plenty of "juice" ;)

Are the top Athlon 64s or top Pentiums (sorry if I asked this before, I might have but can't find it) best at encoding? It's all proc. dependent, right, mem. doesn't matter much?

someone like the wookie would best answer a question like that, i'm no expert in hardware---that's for sure:)

loopyloops,

single core - intel generally as a very very slight edge in speed over equivalent (but cheaper, quieter & cooler temp) AMD. keep in mind this also depends on the application and codec (eg xvid is known to perform faster on amd than intel)

dual core - AMD hands intel's ass on a platter, in almost all areas. nuff said ;)

as for ram, amount doesn't matter much (with most encoding apps) after 1GB, but the faster the better. speed is mainly dependent on cpu though

Where can I find this version at? All that I can find is the one you have to pay for.

Thanks

SVCD2DVD IS Not free but it's the best $20 I've spent. Great for converting most types of files, bin, avi, etc to create files to use with Shrink. Converts Pal to Ntsc during the file encoding. Also has menu creation for those who use them.

In addition there is a Super support site.

When you use this, do your .avis get bigger, i.e. can you stick lots of movies at 700mb on one DVD and watch on a standard DVD player? Is it making mpeg2s? NTSC DVD files (same thing?)?

$30! Is it the best $30 you ever spent?

ajp,
I had been searching this and some other forums for a free program that would convert my wife's many .mov files to DVD and was running in circles. Some were free trials that stamped there software info right in the niddle of the test copy, others needed to be used with as many as 4 other programs, THEN I ran across your recomendation and downloaded the DivXToDVD Converter 0.5.2b software, and what ease and instantaneous results!!

I converted straight from mov to dvd with one step and it preserved all the video quality! Thanks mate! :thumbs_up :thumbs_up

Just wanted to send you this thanks message, Cheers:toast:
