Hello,

you have a great forum guys ;)

im trying to convert dvd to xvid now..

i've downloaded latest xvid codec
XviD-1.1.0-30122005 _Final Release_

i checked your DVD to XViD convertion guide
you have XviD Codec Setup on this page
http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html

this faq is written for older codec. (there're some settings which are not available in latest codec and vice versa)

i wonder if anyone could suggest the best settings for a latest xvid codec
available.

thanks ;)

If you are new to this I would start with the default settings. Cut out and save a small 2-4 minute of the video (to save time) and experiment with the different settings and filters etc to see what they do and what you like.

generally gives highest quality:

enable qpel, enable gmc, set max bvops to 2, use mpeg quantization matrix for higher bitrates (say 1500+) and H.263 for anything lower. enable chroma optimizer and chroma motion, set motion search precision to max (ultra high) and VHQ mode to max as well (wide search). enable VHQ for bframes, set max i-frame interval value to framerate x 10. enable trellis.

this should go without saying-- do 2-pass encoding

also pick a decent resolution, depending on the bitrate. don't go any less than (IMO) 0.19 bits/pixelxframe. you could also decrease audio bitrate to allow higher video bitrate.

note that enabling qpel and gmc will ruin hardware compatiblity (eg. disable those 2 options ONLY if you plan on playing on a divx-certified dvd player). if you want to restore compatibility, re-encoding is needed
