I've got a large avi file (from emule) that plays fine, but after a certain amount of time (5-10 minutes), the screen suddenly goes a light grey colour but the sound continues. I can do nothing but reboot. Ctl-Alt-dlt doesn't work. Alt-tab doesn't work. It's weird. I've downloaded the latest codecs.. Any ideas?

what do you all have on there? too many codecs can/will conflict with one another. do any other files play properly? just installing ffdshow is usually enough to playback most avi's.

Nah, whatever I've done, it's f*&ked up the lot.
I have uninstalled all codecs I'm aware of except ffdshow, but now somethings happening with all videos. After 5 or 10 minutes now, the picture disappears, but then comes back and I can see that the screen resolution has been changed somehow. How do I see what codecs I have installed so I can make sure they are all uninstalled? I'm running A GeForce 6200 TurboCache 256MB card and have the latest forceware installed, so that shouldn't be a problem.

These are the codecs left installed on my system. Which, and how, should I remove?

got latest directx? done a clean install of latest drivers?
open the file in virtualdubmod, drag the slider along and see if the video data actually exists. get the latest ffdshow from http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Getting+ffdshow

DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) is what I have installed.
Clean install of which drivers?
I downloaded virtualdubmod, but it seems difficult to get it to run. You don't need to install the program? Do you need to get separate dll files? If so, where do they have to live? Just in the same driectory all the virtaldubmod files have been placed? When I tried to load a video intop virtualdubmod, I got a message that said "couldn't locate decompressor for format xvid (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirestShow codecs such as those used by WMP are not suitable. Only "Direct Stream copy" is available for this video".

download & install the xvid codec from http://www.free-codecs.com and try again. if that doesn't work, imho the best solution is a format & clean install of windows
