Setup screen freezes when trying to reformat

I change the BIOS to boot from CD. Upon rebooting, my BIOS hangs for about 60 seconds, then proceeds to load. When it says press any key to boot from CD, I then press a key. It then goes to a black screen that says "Setup is inspecting your configuration" (or something close to that). It never loads. or I just didn't wait long enough. I waited for like 10 min. There is no activity light blinking either.

What could be wrong?

i'm thinking it could be:

1. bad cd (got another pc to test it on, and see if it boots)?

2. bad piece of hardware (mobo/hard disk i'd imagine-- but could be anything)

3. overheating???

what are pc specs? unplug all usb/serial devices, network connections, etc. (except for mouse/keyboard ofcourse). also go into bios, load defaults, (means you have to change boot order to dvd drive again). also do a scandisk (setup does this, but do it anyway) and try again

I agree with anony with this, since if it finds a non- compliant hardware during inspection stage it is bound to hang or even if it cannot write to your HDD those detections and related drivers for booting.

Turns out it was a bad stick of RAM. Which Chewy briefy explained to me awhile back. If he would have never said anything, I wouldn't have even tried to remove it. :)

vaguely remember an everest report

One of my buddy's builds with cheaper components, quit booting, the lady
had me look at it, it was hanging at the splash screen, I had already replaced
a 2 month old power supply. I changed the ram, but it still wouldn't boot,
when I tried repair disk, XP couldn't see the system partition(unrecognized format). I did a clean install, everything was fine but then I decided to switch the ram back, wouldn't even boot into a bios post anymore.

all options posted are possible but bad cd give one advice like "can read device" (or something like this).
if you have bad power supply, no matter if you are booting from cd(or other device) or with the old system before format or better.....is impossible to format the hd or run something with bad power supply(*),then....check the memory with "bad conatct" or damaged.

(*) i have one "strange power supply". sometimes the when start(power) came one advice: "processor must be damaged or not installed properly".
i only need to remove the energy plug and put it again....and works. :smashead:

booting pc with damaged cd or without cd in the drive came the advice(faster):
Boot From ATAPI CD ROM: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

my "option" still with bad contact in memory!

depending upon your bios it's always better to turn off fast boot and let it count the memory slowly for a time or two.

cool hint Chewy(i forgot that),it have to check the memory and count how much is installed.
