View Full Version : Editing an MPG file

Say I have an MPEG file that I want to remix/edit the audio for. Now, if it were an AVI, I would open it in VDub and save a WAV, edit the WAV and use "WAV File" audio. If it were WMV, I would use Windows Media Stream Editor, get a WMA, edit that, and mix it back in with Stream Editor.

How do I do this for MPEG? VDub can import, but not save as MPG. Ulead is one option but that reencodes, whereas the other two methods use direct stream copy, which is better quality. Any freeware programs that will do that for MPEG files?

tmpeg is a good tool to start with

==>> mpegtools => de-multiplex

Is projectx free?

Mpeg 1.

@anonymez, does it do a direct stream copy so I don't need to encode again?

like UncasMS said, TMPGenc. you have full Mpeg-1 capabilities with your expired trial drf.

Is that it? It looks weird.

And I uninstalled TMPGEnc once the trial expired because I didn't know you can still use it, I will try to redownload it.

Also,
Demultiplexing, editing and repairing tool for MPEG2, TS, DigitalTV Transport streams. Requires Java r download Projectx compiled with Java included here (27MB).
That mentions MPEG2, what about MPEG 1?

OK, I tried it, and got an MP2 audio file. Nero Wave Editor can't open the MP2. Now what?

LT. Columbo

what exactly do you want to do with the audio file? you could convert it to wav with bewsweet/light. (freeware)

Right, once I get it to WAV and edit it, then how do I put it back in the MPG file? Simple Multiplex won't take WAV, will it?

2 ways with the tools you have.

1) convert the edited wav back to mp2--multiplex

2) re-encode the mpg using the wav as audio source for input.

How do you convert WAV into MP2?

if you use belight, there is an mp2 preset for either dvd or (S)VCD top left under presets>mp2>(s)vcd

hang on drf, upon further inspection i think you can use simple -multiplex with that wav and the video you split earlier--try it.

Alright, I will try it.

"Illegal MPEG Audio Stream"

So I will try BeLight.

good, i figured that would work---and it didn't cost you a nickel.:)

p.s. don't delete TMPGEnc this time--you'll need it again one day i'm sure.
