Divx thru laptop vga output

I connected the laptop to the plasma tv but the movies just come out black with no picture on the tv.i can see the media player on the tv but the viewing window is black. Can this be corrected? thanks

either set the tv to be the 'primary' display through your graphics card's drivers, or play videos with something like 'media player classic' and use vmr9
