UDF1_DVD Burning and Playback

I have a bunch of large MPEG-2 files congesting my HDD, and decided to burn them onto data DVDs. Nero gave me an error message saying the file was too large for ISO compilation, citing a 2GB limit (the files are around 4GB), and said to use UDF compilation instead. I did that and burned the data DVD. It plays back fine on the burner drive and my internal drive, but on my TV/DVD player it stops at 25%, regardless of the video length (e.g. 60 minute video stops at 15 minutes, two hour video stops 30 minutes). I have been using the same burning and playback configuration for months, and did not change anything for this sessions except using UDF1_DVD compilation. Normally, my TV/DVD player handles anything that I throw at it, but in this case it has a problem. Anyone have any idea why this is so, or how to rectify it? Thanks.

I'd like to see that Ner0 log - its in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log (if you have Ner0 7 it's in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero7\Core\NeroHistory.log)

Usually, you would use UDF1.02/ISO bridge as your filesystem.

I just tried burning another one of those 4GB MPEG-2 files, this time using the UDF/ISO bridge data DVD file system in Nero, but got the following message:

The file ... is larger than 2GB and therefore cannot be stored in an ISO file system Please use the UDF file system to write such large files. This can be done by selecting another compilation type.

As I recall, that was the same message I got on the first trial using the ISO file system. So, it seems the only way I can burn these files is by using the UDF system, which as noted above does not play on my TV/DVD player (stopping at 25%), while it works fine on my internal DVD reader and my external reader/writer. In reviewing the Nero log above, it seems there are some questionable entries, but I really don't know what I am looking at and it needs a trained eye. I wonder, does this have anything to do with the way my HDDs are formatted? The external drive where the MPG is stored is NTFS, as is the internal drive where Nero is installed, but the internal storage drive, where the Nero Temp folder is placed (Documents and Settings) is FAT32.

A couple of things here.

1. The disk you burned plays OK in your PC on a software player, but not your DVD player right? You say these are MPEG files (not DVD?), but are trying to play them thru your DVD player. DVD files need DVD Video mode in Ner0.

2. For a USB port, you are burning way too fast. I'd slow it to 1x.

3. What media are you using (media ID code, not brand name)?

Thanks for replying, Blutach, I changed what I could but the problem persists.

1. My TV/DVD player plays practically any file, MPG 1 and 2, AVI, WMV, MP4, WAV, etc., it's one of those all purpose multi-decoders, I guess. I have played dozens of the very same MPEG-2 files, burned on simple data disks, with not a single hitch till now. The only differences in this case is that these files are larger and Nero made me use UDF format. The MPG data disks that worked without a hitch were done in ISO mode, so the problem could be that this player has issues with UDF burned disks, though not sure how to know.

2. Thanks for the advice on burning with USB, I will slow it down next time. The Freecom has a firewire port, too, which I use when I can. Problem is the laptop doesn't have firewire, so I need to use a PC card for that, which is sometimes occupied by other devices. Either way, I never had a single bad burn with USB, except on a DL disk, which turned out to be a firmware issue. [EDIT: It wasn't actually a bad burn, Nero never got started. When I updated the burner firmware, I could then use that precious DL disk. ;-)]

3. I got a box of ten DPR47S2, and used them to do some burning of straight MPEG-2 files for archiving. (I like to avoid authoring into DVD structure so I can use them in editing projects later.) Most of these files were under 2GB, so there was no problem. Burn them on ISO data disks, pop them in my multi-player, and they work fine. However, a few of the files are over 2GB, and so the only difference between the previous MPEG-2 burns on this media was that Nero made me use UDF. Everything else was exactly the same. Eight successful burns from this box of ten, and two that have the problem described above. Like I said, those two play on the PC (with BSPlayer) but not on the TV. I know this may be crap media, but my options are limited, so I take what I can get. Is it possible that some media more unreliable in UDF compilations?

Anyway, my setup is not optimal and I'll improve what I can, but am inclined to think that this problem is due to something else, related maybe to ISO file size limitations (Why would that be imposed?) or my TV not able to read UDF burned disks (Not sure how I can determine that; are there issues with UDF burnings on other multi-players?). I don't have the technical expertise to determine either of these, but would appreciate any help. Best wishes.

All DVD players play UDF1.02 - it is the standard from OTSA (see here (http://www.osta.org/specs/pdf/udf102.pdf) for more info), so I am confident this is not the cause of your problem.

Sense Qual: 0x00This error indicates invalid data in a part of the disk known as the CDB. This indicates the writer ran out of data or the disk contains corrupt subchannel data. See the 05 section here (http://www.cdr-zone.com/articles/atapi_error_codes_page_1.html) for remedies.

It might just be a disk quality/burn speed issue mega.

Thanks blu, I'm happy to know it's not my DVD player. :-) And thanks for that informative link, I bookmarked it for future use. But I'm still perplexed by that error message. In reviewing my Nero log, it turns up on previous burns, too, even when using the ISO mode and with other media. So it might be unrelated to this playback problem, but I am now concerned about the error message. Is that related to media and burn speed for sure? And what are the tangible effects of invalid data in the CDB part of the disk? Like I said earlier, I never had a "bad burn," at least in terms of playback, but is it maybe these are "weak burns"? What does that error mean? Much obliged for your advice.

EDIT: P.S. Is there a way to over ride the file size limitation for ISO burning? Just curious.

Usually, it means the writer ran out of data. Not the worst problem if you have BURP (which most modern writers have), but it still gives me palpitations if I see the write buffers empty. :)

BURP? Interesting acronym for such a problem! :-) I still have a few more of these large MPGs to burn, but will wait till I get better media and try a slower speed or the firewire port. Don't want to give you any more palpitations. ;-)
