my cousin sent me some avi divx files i couldnt play...so i opened it in Virtual dub and got this message...
virtualdub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with
standard CBR values during processing for better compability. This may introduce up to 3910ms of skew
from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV
file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder.(134.1 +/- 19.2)
when i tried to extract audio stream as wav i got message that no decompressor was found to decompress source audio format

very typical message from vdub, just click ok. it should be mpeg layer- 3 audio with that VBR warning i'm guessing. post a screen shot of the file info from vdub.
others may have their ways, i have other ways too using vdubmod and belight, but this will work to get a wav file (if you don't have, get LAME encoder) but lets see the screenshot first.
Another option is to change the audio to a .WAV file using Virtualdub. Load the file. Go to "video">Direct stream copy. Under "audio">full processing mode, Click "audio" again. click Conversion check 48,000Hz and check "high quality" and ok. Go to "audio" >compression, select "no compression" (PCM) and ok. Finally go to FILE> save WAV. this will produce a .wav file (audio only).
note, i chose 48.000Hz because i knew i was creating a DVD.
BTW are you wanting to just play this thing, or convert to something else? VLC player is a simple solution for just playback too. but i bet this is a file with typical attributes.
if you want CBR with the avi you load the wav with the avi after you create it and compress (i use LAME) CBR for example, video direct stream copy. no skew:)

sounds like a fake or corrupt file. you could try divfix, but it's a longshot. does vlc say if it can fix it or not?

VLC player repaired the file, after about an hour...but is there a way to save the file so it doesnt have to be repaired everytime?

with vlc? dunno. try divfix maybe, i'd get the proper decompressors and try to re-encode with vdub anyway, make a new avi out of it (if possible)

as said divfix doesnt work- it messages that this isnt avi file
what are proper decompressors? - i installed farunhofer codec thing
waiting for the avi import filter to reconstruct missing index blox to see if i can create a new file
does vdubmod play it? try a direct stream copy
vdubMOD doesnt even open the file!

vdubMOD doesnt even open the file!
error message?
if vdub can't handle it, we can re-encode with VLC

it says it cant detect file type...
vlc could repair it...but dont know how to keep those changes in the file...overall i think there are some header problems

but in your original post you mentioned the audio error (which indicates it opened without problems?)
anyway you can encode with vlc through file-->wizard

then recover what you can with vdub and ask your cousin to do it again and encode properly this time... aside from those 8 minutes, i don't believe any further data is in there, sorry!
