What constitutes a good scan?

I see 'post your disc scan' threads all over the various burning forums, and I'm just curious to know what exactly a good scan is supposed to look like. I've never really done one on any of my backups; I figure if they play when I put them in my set-top player, it's good enough :)

Anyone want to enlighten me?
