ive been reading a lot in the forums about the dvd-format not being recommended for burning.to test this theory i bought a pack of these.and hey presto my dvdcombi loves them.as does my playstation 2 and they are hard too please when it comes to blank media.so why do theses not come recommended.and what is other peoples experiences of the dvd-format?........

If looking merely at the format -R discs have a wider range of compatability with stand alone players, it was the first format introduced therefore it has been around longer and more older players support this format over +R flavored discs. If you look at what you can do with the discs as well, you'll notice that -R discs aren't capable of being booktyped to DVD_ROM (commercial DVD). The +R discs can do this, thus increasing the compatability on more players, including some players that will only read -R discs. So the reasoning behind recommending +R over -R isn't necessarily an arguement over which one is better, but more of which one has a higher compatability rate. +R discs alone without being booktyped have a lower compatability rate, but once booktyped that all changes.

good post,i also suppose its the old adage what ever works best for you.....PS most modern players play anything and everthing....

They both seem to have a very high compatibility rate these days as old aliiances recognised that both formats are here to stay and built their players to recognise both formats.

If anything, the +Rs are more compatible - they can be booktyped and their refelctivity is the same as DVD-VIDEO.

I have had more luck with dvd dash R's than plus, I am still evaluating bitsetting. But it seems to be the way to go as software, firmware and hardware evolve to implement it.

i've always considered +media devilish, tainted. -R is pure, wholesome and gives a warm fuzzy feeling when you look at the package. when ones players hate + you may feel this way too.:p

someday you'll get a new burner and someone will give you a +R disk and you will experiment and find they play when bitsett, if we live that long

since you are aquainted with the rules discman, you should be aware of rule 17. this is "friendly banter" which in moderation is perfectly acceptable here and there.

I use nothing but +R booktyped\bitset to DVD-R0M now and lend out some of my backups for other people to watch and give back. Not one of them has said they would not play. When I was using -R some said they would not play in their players. I'm not sure what brand of players they have. :toast:

Same here...in fact I switched to +R so I could booktype them to see if they had a higher degree of compatability because not all of the -R's could be viewed by my friends.

I have 2 Apex players and a LiteOn standalone recorder (which is also set to booktype\bitset to DVD-ROM now) in my house that play either + or - media also. I myself never had a problem with -R it was friends and family that did, that is why I switched to the DVD-ROM setting. :toast:

i think originally when players were developed their specification was r.o.m.then came the dvd-format then dvd+and so on .it also depends on the player quality as well.......

I threw about 50 of the sob's away after i found out how bad they were,
redoing that many backups really burned me up with Memorex

The funny thing is that Memorex work fine for some people...the real question is for how long?

I have yet to try a -R disc. Out of about 400 backups never had a +R that wouldn't play. Tried them on various players.
Did have issues with Memorex discs though. Seem to wear out quickly if you view them alot. I use only Sony D21 now and get great results. Anyone else notice the weight difference in discs. Sony feels heavier than Memorex to me. Real or imagined???:toast:

I am going to buy a few -R next time I purchase blanks just to experiment with. At times I have seen them priced lower than my +R .:)
I'm blessed with 3 sticky fingered rug rats. That could be part of my problem with Memorex disc life..LOL

I guess I bought into the "-R is more compatable" theory from so long ago.... that's all I've ever bought.

Way back when it probably was true...but now you know the possibilities of the +R format.

I favor the cheapest made in japan blanks.
It's nice to be able to bitsett but for long term storage it's not relavent.
