playing back xivds??? what to do's!!!

ok I downloaded an video thought it was divx but its in xvid format what are the steps in order for me to play it on my laptop....

download & install either the xvid codec or ffdshow

ok I got vlc but it still didnt play...still keeps saying the video file type is a BIN., so I dont know what that means if I have to decode it or what???
