I dl a file which was compressed using Divx 5.01. The encoder left the file interlaced. I am trying to simply use the deinterlace filter on this file.

I opened the file.
Set the audio to direct stream copy
Set the video to full processing mode
Set the deinterlace filter
Set compression to divx 5.01
selected save as avi

I thought this would work fine. The original file is 600 megs, the output file created was only 245 megs. Obviously it didn't work properly. I have tried different codecs for the compression, and different bitrates, but every time it ends up at 245 megs. I figured I must be doing something wrong.

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I just can't figure it out.

Post the original file information here. Does the file happen to be DivX-compressed or not?

Have you tried to take the bitrate up to the max, 10000?
And if you have, is it still the same filesize?
Btw if you want to use divx 5 downlaod the newest divx 5.0.2 instead of 5.0.1.

And a question, what deinterlace filter do you use, it shouldn't matter on the filesize but there are much better deinterlace filter then the one coming with VD.

If you use the original try to download Telecide and Deinterlace filter by Gunnar Thelin (at least I think that's his name), you can find both at http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft
