Ok I have decided not to put any more money into my cpu and have decided to start fresh and build one I'm fine picking harddrives & burners but know absolutely nothing about processors and motherboards I want it to be able to run multiple apps at same time and support both gaming and video. It will probably take 2 months economically to finish can anyone help me with the motherboard and processor I want one that's very up to date all my current hardware is ide so one that I can use my stuff on is ideal but if that's not wise I will buy sata

I want one that's very up to date all my current hardware is ide so one that I can use my stuff on is ideal but if that's not wise I will buy sata

that's the conflict

ide is being phased out

you can build a good computer with dual core and try to stay away from the newest motherboards, save money and keep ide

I'd rather go sata because I plan on building something to last 3-4 years and if I buy sata and upgrade then I can transfer my hardware

dont they make a pci card for sata boards that supports ide?

pci controller cards work great for ide hard drives but are problematic with
dvd burners

27 Apr 2007, 07:07 AM
well that's actually ok because i just bought a western digital caviar 320gb like 3 months ago The whole prob is i want a video card but my board is agp 8x so if i buy a good one and then get a new cpu next year its useless I have an insufficient power supply and my ram is ddr400 i have 752mb i want more but at the price of ram to buy more for this cpu is senseless again because next year it's useless / my problem is I know absolutely nothing about boards or processors that match

I should add that I need another harddrive any way I didn't know about partitioning so I mine aswell go sata again for longevity reasons

with no or little overclock and no voltage increase for the core, stock cooling should be more than adequate

Don't know why it would matter which order you purchase the items in. You could create a "wish list" at newegg & then make the purchases as you have the money avail., or watch for shipping deals, rebates, etc. That is what I did on my recent build. Got back a pile of $$$ in rebates! :bounce:

That is what I suggest too. Create your entire build on newegg and place it all in your wishlist and save it. Watch for shipping deals or price drops and buy as your funds allow it. You'll have it in no time at all. I do howwever, suggest that the processor be the last thing you but due to the fact that Newegg has a 30 day return policy on the processors. In the off chance you actually get a DOA proc. , you wouldn;t know it untill you did the actual build. If you bought it first and shelved it for 2 months while getting the other parts, your warranty period is over and you would have to take other avenues to rectify the problem.

With a nice vid card like that, don't forget to add a nice 22" widescreen LCD monitor to the list! :-)

BTW, for close to the same $$$, you can maybe find a bit better rated one that would also include a fan, instead of just a heatsink.

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049) is what I chose. It had a rebate on it when I bought it. Reviews are pretty good.

very nice listen this is the first time I ever in my life even looked at pc components I am extremely unexperienced w/ this stuff your input is always appreciated it should say bronze member for me not to go 2 into detail but i had a nice desktpo i bought open box for $600 with tax return last year in june my house got flooded and i lost pc so someone gave me Pentium4 2.8ghz with 20gb harddrive 256mb ram and a keyboard I got into the video and games about 5 months ago and bought harddrive 512ram and 2 burners It's a very old mobo so I need ram video card etc but decided not to spend any more money on this and am trying to build my first pc but for the most part this stuff is beyond me right now i looked up what i thought was good quality

trying to build my first pc but for the most part this stuff is beyond me right now i looked up what i thought was good qualityWell, there is some great instruction avail. on here for your first build. Look in the General Computing (http://forum.digital-digest.com/forumdisplay.php?f=105) section of the forum for some good threads, & to get a feel for what you want to do.

Not saying you didn't pick nice components, but if you are on a budget, you wanna make sure to get the most bang for your buck! This one I just assembled cost me approx. $600, not including the burners & a new monitor.

I am very pleased with the performance, but of course could have easily spent more for a faster box. :)

It's hard to justify spending a grand on a new computer if you are on a budget. Just on the cost of hardware I try to steer clients into the 5-700$ range, using components priced at the "sweet spot". If you need the "latest and greatest" and can afford a huge depreciation in the first 2 years, by all means spend a lot more. Video cards and cpu's are the worst components for being overpriced. A 300-400$ one will be worth less than half that in a year.

Katz I rad the entire thread on you build I think i'll stick to the mobo I wanted but I see what u guys mean with processors value it's worse than cars .I also viewed other ram I am not familiar with brands what r the best moderately priced brands and is 1gb enough ?

jblitz277
5 May 2007, 05:22 AM
Sorry for back to back posts I was wondering about socket #'s on mobos the one i selected is socket 775 do they continue making processors that will fit this for years to come

5 May 2007, 05:22 AM
Katz I rad the entire thread on you build I think i'll stick to the mobo I wanted Yeah, I did buy older technology, but then again, I was interested on squeezing the $$$ on this one. I am not hardcore gaming, so that didn't matter, & most of the parts I could take along to the next upgrade. As Chewy says, Ram - cas 2 better than cas 3. you get what u pay for. Most folks think 1 gb is plenty. Don't buy bargain basement stuff, I did that on an older pc I have & Chewy was mad :D

Chewy
5 May 2007, 06:21 AM
matching ram to the core duo 2's is a little tricky, if you don't overclock then
you only get a few percentage points from cas 4 vs cas 5, and then you have the problem of synchronization, they do better with cpu and ram running at the same fsb

to hit the higher speeds you would need very good ram

I would get a gig of good stuff if I was overclocking, 2 gigs of the cheaper
if not
