What type of Blank DVD?

Please bear with me as I am brand new to the works of DVD burning. :) I get a message that says "burn process failed". I am using Nero 7 to burn. And I am using a DVD-R. Do I have to have a DVD-R(W) to do this, or is something else the problem?
