I have an avi video that I converted to mpeg2 using mencoder (NTSC, 4:3) and then used DVDAuthorWizard and DVDStyler (separately and independently) to author a dvd (NTSC, 4:3). I then burned the DVD. It plays fine on my home TV(NTSC, 4:3)/dvd player except for a black band on the bottom quarter of the screen. The dvd plays on my pc, though, (using any video player) at 4:3 but with jerky video. The sound is fine. If I play the VIDEO_TS directory (as though it was a dvd), using xine, the same jerky video shows up. If I play the VTS_01_.VOB file located inside the VIDEO_TS directory with any video player, the video and the sound is perfect and there are no problems.

What is the problem with the disc and the VIDEO_TS to cause the jerky video (and black band on the TV)? The problem shows up using either of the authoring tools. Any help would be appreciated.

See "Got bad playback" in my signature. Ensure you are using high quality media.

I doubt it is a hardware/dvd disc problem since the symptoms are duplicated when playing off of the DVD files on the hard disc. But playing the vob files themselves shows fine.

Meaning the vobs are muxed correctly. What software player are you using? Many are totally hopeless.

Try a mock strip. Perhaps the pointers are screwed.

Run your project thru VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm).
