I had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful thunderstorm tonight.

After minutes of being indecisive whether or not to shutdown my pcs i had the idea of taking some pictures instead and here is the very shot which reasured me the choice was good.

That came out beautiful! What program are you using to render the photos?

UncasMS
19 Aug 2007, 06:28 PM
I used PS but there are numerous HDR tools available for this job:

- easyHDR (freeware) (http://www.easyhdr.com/)

- Qtpfsgui (freeware) (http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/)

- Photomatix (http://www.hdrsoft.com/) (tends to very [too intense often] colours and creates lots of noise, which will have to be reduced)

- FDRTools (http://www.fdrtools.com/front_e.php)

- Dynamic-PHOTO HDR (http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html)

btw: don't forget to take your different pictures with the SAME aperture - vary the exposure time!

I'd rather try to manually accomplish the job with imaging software like photoshop because you have full control over what is smoothed, how much is smoothed or which parts need to be "healed".

Tutorials like this one (http://www.lunacore.com/photoshop/tutorials/tut020.htm) for PS can be found easily.

I used the following keywords in Google: photoshop skin smoother tutorial

That is really nice, it's so crisp and vivid!

I don't have PS, I have Adobe Photo Deluxe. It's a scaled down version and works pretty well, but it doesn't have that "healer" tool. It does have something close to it so I can usually accomplish what I set out to do.

UncasMS

I only used F 8.0 for the pictures from this p-o-v but i used max. sharpness from the raw import and the colours are the result of hdr and additional layer merging

BTW does your Olympus actually have a spot metering mode?

This is the first I heard of it .So I had to look it up (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/OS710/OS710A.HTM), and I guess it does have it.What's it for ?
45 Seconds after your first picture there is one of the birds missing.

UncasMS

I took a look at the exif data of your picture and i stumbled across the selected metering mode: spot

With a spot metering mode you usually have the most center part of your finder for the metering only - all the rest is being ignored in terms of metering the light

so when would one usually pick spot metering as opposed to integral or multi/pattern metering?

let's start the other way around: with a balanced scene you would normally pick integral metering so that most of the visible area of your picture will be used for the light metering but this will only result in a decent exposure when dark and light spots are balanced in your picture.

should you, however, deal with a dark object in front of a light scene or a light object in front of a dark scene your main focus of attention - the face (into which the sun shines) of a person against the shadows - will not be metered correctly with integral metering (covering almost the entire picture for the metering) as light or dark parts dominate the picture.

in this case one would swap to spot metering in order to measure only the face and not the darker background for the exposure metering.

i found some words on metering modes at wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metering_mode)

maybe it'll help shedding some more light on exposure metering.

i used spot metering or even multi spot with my old Canon T90 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_T90) quite often because analog cameras and film material did not provide so many ways of correcting pictures like we now have in the digital era.

UncasMS

yes, ps cs3 was used

- main layer was duplicated

- next i used the easy way to extract your flower/main object from the duplicated layer: => filter => extract (or alt + ctrl +x) (http://blog.thembid.com/index.php/2007/08/22/removing-backgrounds-quickly-in-photoshop/)

- now i had the yellow flower extracted and duplicated the flower once more and used layer blending to make it a bit more intense

- finally i "blurred" the background with another filter => lens blur

Scroll down this site (http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/tt.html#) and search for "lens blur" in order to see a video tutorial

i've had this idea of a candle spraying sparks for quite some time now and tonite i turned the idea into a photo.

c.f. picture 1-4 following the final photo for a how-to:

pic.1
i used an ordinary candle for this picture, which had been burned down inside for more than 1/3 of its height.

pic2
next i made a couple of test shots in order to determine a decent exposure, while a friend hold the sparklers.
i came up with 4 seconds exposure time, f:32, iso 200 and 55mm focal length and a polarizer in order to lengthen the exposure time some more

pic3
this final shot has been photoshopped quite a bit afterwards:
healing the spots on the candle, merging two layers to have a darker background and more intense sparks flying around and adding a photoframe

pic4

i have seen some of them and i like this kind of art very much i must say but i have never gotten the hang of it

actually no because i only got the dslr by the end of july and there was so much to learn in terms of digital photography as opposed to the analog world which i have been accustomed to for more than 20yrs.

so far i haven't had the time to think about webspace and such in order to put the pics onto.

the new rules have changed quite a bit - that's true but because of that we tried to establish new areas of discussion and interest and i for one wanted to spent my "spare time" on digital photography

I wouldn't know how to start a web page nor do I have any inclination to learn right now. That's why I like deviantArt as a gallery. You can start a gallery without having to even think.

You can also have dA watermark your images. I had someone download 14 of my images from my second gallery in as many minutes. So if your ever in Argentina and see one of my fractals, let me know! :rotfl:

You really have to appreciate what can be done digitally on your own these days.

i most definitely do - especially because i spent many years developing pictures (b&w) myself in the darkroom

the last couple of years i hardly used my T90 anymore because i wasn't able to use a darkroom any longer and develop the picture myself and have full control over the entire process

and though i am a photoshop user for more than a decade now i hardly used it for pictures i shot myself as i didn't go digital with an SLR system until this summer

sony dsc-p52
1/125 + F3.8
ISO 320
no flash fired

at least this is what the picture exif data tell ^_~

+++++

these are the steps i took:

- using noiseware to reduce noise/grain a little

- inserting the sparks with knoll light factory

- inserting the white "halos" arond the sparkler with eye candy 5 impact => backlight

- removing parts of this newly created halo layer in order to have it only on the left half of the sparkler

- applying "MikeW Landscape-Light Background Gallery Frame" Action

- googling for the demon picture and inserting it top left

- applying a layer mask to the demon layer and using a wide, soft black brush to reduce the transparency of the layer from bottom right to top left so that the image seems to dissolve from the center of the sparkler

- masking the outline of the remaining demon with ctrl-click on the layer and afterwards applying eye candy 5 nature => smoke to the outline of the demon and have this smoke image created as a new layer (to be able to reduce/change transparency later on).

- moving this smoke layer to the very top of the layers in order to have this smoke effect exceed the picture layer and be even visible on the white background border

- duplicating demon layer as i had "removed" a little bit too much with the layer masking and didnt want to reverse it by applying a WHITE brush against the black one used before. it is way easier to simply have another layer add to the density a little bit.

i hope the attached screenshot with the remaining layers can shed some light on the steps taken

That was absolutely brilliant UncasMS, both as an idea and as the execution.

@gonwk, thank you for the compliments. And you have got the answer about the shot from UncasMS's post.

BTW,UncasMS, I am thinking about getting a new still digicam. I am not too keen about going for SLRs. I have narrowed down my choice to Sony DSC H2/H5 ,Canon S3IS/S5IS, Panasonic Lumix FZ 27/30/50 after reading about them at dpreview. What do you suggest? One thing I really need is the large zoom because I often trek in the Himalayas and love those close-ups of the mighty peaks.

UncasMS
11 Nov 2007, 09:04 PM
What do you suggest?

that is a difficult task:eek:

let's start with canon vs sony with their S5 IS <=> DSC H5:

those two should be in a very similar price range and thus it is rather fair to compare them as opposed to adding the Panasonic FZ 50 here which is way more expensive

judging the technical data they are close but i see a little advantage for the canon:

- higher ISO range
- slightly higher picture sensor 8mp
- 4x digital zoo

when it comes to output quality i must say i never used either one so i took a look at the dpreview results and because both camera lack a RAW output i prefer the canon way of NOT applying a too heavy noise reduction as opposed to the sony (H9 in that test) because you can hardly recovery lost details but you can easily denoise a picture with decent software!
in other words the canon picture can be made to look as vivid and smoothed as the sony h9 but you will never be able to increase the amount of visible details left in the sony.

i can't say the canon wins hands down but i'm sure i'd rather go for the canon than for the sony

( but then i'd never go for any sony product anyway)

the Lumix FZ 50 on the other hand is way more expensive and bigger than the other two candidates but it offers RAW format!

photoshop cs2 btw supports the fz 50 raw format but one would have to install a plugin and i must say that acr 3.x is not as good as the latest acr 4.x which came with cs3 but the pansonic comes with silkypix and this raw converter is said to be quite good.

i heard one user say that his canon eos 350d (a dslr cam) was the same size as the lumix fz 50 - so no gain in terms of size.

the amount of digitial noise is said to be quite clearly visible with the fz 50 or to be eliminated by applying heavy denosiers which is said to result in loss of detail. on the dprev site you can find two pictures taken with iso 800 and the noise is strong - cf. the monkey and the baby pic.

this is what you hear often: strong noise with higher iso rates - no need to mention that a smaller dslr like an eos 350d/rebel won't show this amount of noise with iso 800 due to the much bigger sensor of a digital single lens reflex.

but then on the other hand: this noise can be reduced with photoshop :teeth:

moreover, the display of the lumix fz 50 seems to be a nice feature when you want to take pictures from rather unusual angles/positions.

the image stabalizer is said to do a good job but i think the same goes for the sony and canon as well.

and last but not least the quality of the lens (leica elmarit) should turn the lumix into the best choice here despite the fact that this cam is more expensive and bigger than other candidates.

so if you don't mind the extra money and a slightly bigger cam than i'd opt for the panasonic lumix fz 50.

and make sure to take your pictures with RAW mode because it is so much more powerful when it comes to turning a rather bad pictures (in terms of light) into something decent because the raw format stores much more details/information.

hi br7,
thanks for keeping us up2date

could you by chance provide a bigger version of your picture?
it is rather hard to "go into details" with this one *g*

what comes to my mind is this:
- have you thought about applying different filter styles to your main areas (rock / sky)?
- masking/selection may be worth spending some time on ( i very much like layer masks btw!)
- vignetting could be removed (by using stamp tool or filter => lens correction)

if you like / don't mind could you provide us with the source picture?
i'd like to give it a try and see if i could realize what i have in mind and of course give you a step by step description of the parts i may edit.

but like an idiot I didn't save it in psd so I can't fix it
i know exactly what it feels like ^_~

i was editing one of the pipe pictures i took recently and was almost finished when ps all of a sudden heavily crashed and ruined my entire work.
i didnt save the tonemapped, layer masked and stamped picture a single time and was punished for being much too careless.

Masking is something I need to work on, but I do get what your saying.I never really gave any thought to doing it in sections and I think I will give it a go.The picture came with XP but I will post it anyway :)

sorry it took some time but here is my approach:

1.
- noise reduction on this layer

- magic wand was used (many times with a tolerance setting of 32% and holding down "shift" in order to expand the mask) to select the sky OUTSIDE arch as a first step.

- having selected the entire area of sky outside the arch i clicked on "add layer mask" down right in the layer palette

you can see the result in in the small picture added for demonstration of the layers used

- finally i used "knoll light factory" on the this layer (NOT on the layer mask) to create the light rays

2.
- same procedure for sky INSIDE arch except light rays

3.
- used a copy of background, turned it into b/w (picture => settings => b/w) and then used "linear light" for the layer merging inside layer palatte

this resulted in an arch with way more contrast and fill light

4.

- reduced image size to 1024 px width

- merged all layers down to one

- used sharpening filter on the entire picture
(having reduced a picture in size it is almost always a very good idea to use a sharpening filter before saving the final image)

- image saved

have you tried or WERE you able to CLICK ON the filename (lights.jpg)?

maybe it was my "fault" for not "approving" all those postings which contained linked images like the example you quote

i have now selected all posting within this thread that contain attachment like the one from paglamon and "approved" them so the question is: does it work now and have you tried to click the file names before i "approved" all postings today?

if you were not able to click the attachment names before then i will have to think about how we could handle attachments in future because i wasnt even aware other people were not able to click the linked attachments as i always was able to do so and never even thought about "approving" anything.

we will hopefully find a solution :toast: and i'm sorry for the trouble

if i were you i'd try objects like yours with a little less sharpness for the background.
reducing the depth of focus could be achieved with an open aperture (smaller number) when taking the picture or later on with digital manipulation like in this case:

@ Paglamon ... loved the Snow ... but what in the world are those little flaggy thinks around the edges of the snow and the lake?

They ARE flags. They are somehow related to the religious faith (Buddhism) of the people at that part of the country. There is a tragic story behind the name of the lake(and pass). It is called SELA PASS and SELA LAKE. Sela was a common village girl. She fell in love with an Indian soldier, Jaswant Singh. In the Indo-China war of 1962, Jaswant was captured and killed after he singlehandedly resisted a 75 man Chinese army for 72 hours. He ran from bunker to bunker firing shots. The Chinese thought that there was a whole army present because of firing from multiple bunkers. The local people ,including Sela, helped Jaswant. Finally he was captured. After his death, Sela was said to have jumped off the mountains at this place.

the link is definitely worth reading!

nonetheless i'd like to give some feedback concerning f/stop (or aperture) and DOF + focal length, all of which is closely related to one another.

f/stop or aperture: using a small number or more opened aperture will let more light get through your lens and lead to a SMALLER DOF (depth of field).

this graphic from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Aperture_diagram.svg) demontrates opened vs closed apertures:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Aperture_diagram.svg/462px-Aperture_diagram.svg.png

a higher number means the aperture is closed more and thus less light will get through your lens (inevetably requiring a SLOWER shutter speed than using an open aperture) but at the same time the DOF will be increased and therefor more of the area behind and in front of that very spot you have put the focus on (in case you took influence and not let the camera decide on which point to focus on!!!).

the DOF / depth of field is narrow with opened aperture AND longer focal length and even the distance to your object is of importance - c.f. this wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/38/DOF-ShallowDepthofField.jpg/350px-DOF-ShallowDepthofField.jpg

what does all this means with reference to your picture?

1. make sure to focus on the mountain ridge and NOT on the trees!
(make yourself familiar with the D60's three point AF and try using only the central AF spot in order to focus only on that part of your image which you decide on and not the cameras AF system, which might actually focus on the trees and not your desired background)

2. use the D60's "aperture priority mode (A)" and force the camera to use a small number as your f/stop (smallest number depends on your lens [and amount of money spent on the lens :p ])

3. show your result :thumbs_up

despite the cold a grabbed my camera and the tripod and took some pictures after work today

here is the first example of a church illuminated in twilight -this period of time is way too short to take pictures from more than one location

i made three different pictures (using my canons AEB function, which shoots 1 picture with correct metering and one pic with the "bracket" you set it to [i used the max of 2 f.stops]) above and one below the correct value

those three picture were turned into a HDR via photomatix and afterwards photoshopped

I wish I would have found this thread when I bought my Canon EOS Rebel XSi 12.2MP camera. I loved the camera Unfortunately, I had to return the camera because I needed the money back (I had to pay Uncle Sam $1,300 back in taxes).

I was reading about this 500D earlier today - http://www.techradar.com/reviews/cameras-and-camcorders/cameras/digital-slrs/canon-eos-500d-595841/review

But, I'll probably end up buying this Nikon I found today at Newegg - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830113037

I'll see if I can find some pics I took with it. I didn't have it long enough to start playing with Photoshop though.

comparing nikon d40 and canon 500d there is nothing that would make me go yellow

the 500d has by far the better features

on the other hand the canon 40D is dirt cheap these days and i'd most definitely go for a two digit canon

Here are some of my favorite pics taken on the Fox River after the wicked flood that wiped out a lot of our city last summer. As devistating as that was there are some pretty pics from it though.

NON of this pics were edited or photoshoped in anyway shape or form. These are shown just the way they were taken.

i am far from being a pro, pa, but thanks for the kind words.

that concert was a coverband playing in a very small hall so i was able to step right up to the stage.
(will be seeing metallica these days but as opposed to the coverband i will not be allowed to take pictures :mad2: )

some pictures were taken with wideangle lenses (10-17mm) and others with a 100mm lens.

concerning sharpness: most of the pics i took that night looked rather crappy because the light was extremely bad and you only see the better one :p

the other aspect is: you can actually gain something with imaging tools
i apply sharpening filter to almost any picture you see here because you will always have to sharpen an image after reducing its resolution.

if you don't mind i'd like to demonstrate that even with your lovely photo there is a little more to it which can be unveiled.

take a look at sharpness and highlight/shadow balance

What tools or filter did you use to make that so bright? That looks awesome is there anything that could be done with the pics with the reflecting clouds? Never tried to play with those pics yet.

I have learned many many cool tricks with Photoshop I have CS2. But I am still learing the program as there is much to learn with a program like that.

Thanks Carla:)

I created this from 3 photos the guy on the left is an X boyfriend beleive that or not. LOL
Anyways the fun with this one was he had a bad habbit of getting real wasted while hanging out at his mothers bar. So one night I was taking some pics with some cheap point and shoot 35mm camera. And decided to play a trick on him. I told him that some guy came into the bar with a tiger cub, when he didnt belive me I showed him a 4X6 picutre printed on the same paper they use at Sam's club to print out 35mm pics.

He bought the story and really belived there was a tiger in the bar.
Photo Shop can be fun!

yes i did

a couple of days ago i wanted to "capture" smoke and started with lighting a simple match but the little bugger did not create any smoke at all so i had to rethink the whole idea and decided to buy incense sticks and they actually did a great job.

the setup for these pictures was fairly simple:

i placed two of the incense sticks in front of a black cloth, set the flashlight on a tripod to the right side behind the incense sticks and used a very simple and inexpensive way to build a snoot for the flash in order to focus the light ray to a very narrow area: i bought pringles and used that cylinder as a snoot

flash light was manually reduced to 1/4 and connected with the camera via (extended) cable

now all i needed was a little patience to focus correctly which was hard in a near darkened room and take a couple of pictures

My first experiment with 3D photography. View the picture in fullscreen wearing a red/green glass. I myself viewed it wearing a trial frame(one used by optometrists to test the power of your spectacles) with a red glass in front of the right eye and green glass in front of the left eye.You will appreciate the space between the backrest of the chair and the teddy.

This is a shot from Oct 9th disappointing loss of the St. Louis Cardinals to the LA Dodgers in the NL playoffs. It was taken with my new Traveler camera that stitches pictures into panorama shots using software that comes with the camera See Thread Here (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=92160)
It was shot at 10 Mpx and opened in PS Elements 7, it says the size is 210"x36" (WTF?) Anyway, without software to magnify, it's appears small. Going to Hawaii in 2 weeks and looking forward to getting some good pics there.
