AVI To DVD

Hi Fnds,

I am a NewBie to this group.

I need some suggestion. I have a lot of avi movie files. Now My Hard-disk is cring for space. So I am planning to write these movie into dvds so that I can see these movies in my DVD player as well. Now the Problem is I am not able to find any application which will allow me to Write 3-5 Avi files into one DVD. More over these applications (Super, DVDFlick, etc) are taking around 2-3 hr to convert one AVI file.

Can any one suggest me any quick way to convert these AVI files to DVD vob format ?

You can do that with all of them. You will have to set the target size of each to CUSTOM instead of the default 4.7GB.

BTW, 5 avi into 1 SL DVD(as DVD-Video) will produce crap quality. It is better to have them as DivX or XviD avi. Most standalones these days will play DivX/XviD.

I got ur point regarding how to set custome size so that more movie files can fit in one DVD.

But regarding the Divx/Xvid....I couldnt understand. can u please through some more light. I'll be glade if you guide me elaborately.

One more thing I want to ask .....Approx how much time it will take to convert one AVI file ? Is there any trick to reduce the encoding time ?

A 90 min run time avi, should not be compressed too much when converted to mpeg2/vob format. Quality will be lost. A single dvd should be used. You need adequate ram, high cpu speed and plenty of hard drive space. Buy a divx capable player and quit trying to convert.

Use a free converter like any video converter free version to convert the files to MPEG-2 movie, then use DVDStyler to burn the files. so there won't be any extra cost...

I need a little help also please. (63 yr. old novice)
I too had some avi's that I wished to convert to a DVD, used a program allowing me to do this, result three dvd's all okay except the completed job included a super imposed message (text) in centre of screen viewed throughout each of the dvd's. Now, having remaining avi's on PC, and I wish to also make them a dvd, I used another program to do the job, bingo, did the job and I am very happy with the result (no super imposed message) used the newer program and imagburn to complete the task. At this point, is where I need your help..... Can I ..... with the first three dvd's I made that include the unwanted super imposed message, recopy the now existing dvd's using the build sequence in Imagburn to remove, or not include the unwanted message, if the answer is in the affirmative, can you point me in the right direction in advising how I go about selecting or do not include file(s) X,y or z.
I am more than happy to read further if, threads are available, please point me there and I would be most grateful. I have in the past got my answers reading and searching, but with this one I do need a little help.

If you want to burn many clips on one DVD with navigation menu, i recommend Movie DVD Maker. It does support many video formats.

I don't think you can. The message is probably now part of the video.

@ Greene - Best save up your AVI's as they are ... if their qulaity was good enough for you to keep this long ... you will save a ton of space in your bookcase ... since you can easily get 5 AVI's on 1 DVD-R ... you burn them as "Data" ...
Just go and buy a "Philips" DivX capable dvd player and you are done ... less than $50.

@ ilikasip - I agree with paglamon ... the "imposed" messages are part of your dvd now ... you could have removed them (actually Blank them off) using VirtualDub ... before converting to dvd.

You have to encode each DVD to a DivX/XviD avi. Since DivX/XviD can produce pretty good results at bitrates lower than DVD,the avi file sizes are lower.
AutoGK is one of the easiest tools for DVD to avi ,where you can mention the target size of your file. However,IMO, fitting 5 avi files(each will be about 800 MB) into a DVD will be compromising quality a bit.
