It's been patched already.
Updated versions of ZoneAlarm are available from here (http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html).

Hmm, I was just about to post a thread asking for help. After an update Wed, I was unable to establish a connection afterwards.. The 2 updates were...
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
A security issue has been identified that could allow a remote attacker to misrepresent a system action or behavior unbeknownst to users on Microsoft Windows systems. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
After the download, this tool runs one time to check your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps remove any infection that is found. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time that you start your computer. A new version of the tool will be offered every month. If you want to manually run the tool on your computer, you can download a copy from the Microsoft Download Center, or you can run an online version from microsoft.com. This tool is not a replacement for an antivirus product. To help protect your computer, you should use an antivirus product.
I had to do a system restore to be able to get online yesterday and again today. I wonder, since the news item originates from a UK site, if this is the same issue. I was burning a dvd today and left the room, when I came back there was a box asking for a restart onscreen...clicked restart later, and left the room again. 20 mins later, the Imgburn screen wasn't on, and the dvd had finished. I'm guessing that restart box came back on, and after a few minutes without a response, it restarted the pc automatically, creating the same 'can't connect to the net' prioblem.
The update icon is sitting on the toolbal again. I've switched Win Update to 'tell me there's an update, but don't d/l it.' If it does it again, know to lower the ZA firewall setting..

Just lower the 'Internet Zone' firewall setting temporarily to medium, download the updated ZoneAlarm, install and then reset the firewall to high.
Then you can reactivate your Windows Update settings and let Windows reinstall the update without any further problems.

I quit on Zone Alarm long ago because different things broke it down where I was either unprotected or the internet was blocked.
