hi everyone,
this is my fist post here so I really hope I will get my asnwers :)
I need to convert different type of video formats to divx 6.0 since this is what my dvd player in my car supports. Before I encoded to the latest one (7) but it wont play :(
I mostly have .avi files and some other HD rips or BD rips... well things that one could download nowdays...
The crusial thing here is I thing the divx version. In pioneer they told me I should take up to 6.0 (not sure if for example version divx 6.5 is the same).
PLEEEASE help me with this solution how to convert all the files I need.
P.s. downloaded a divx 6 pro... but all the 3 different movies that I tried to convert showed me the same error...something with MPEG-1 audio coded.. :(

What tool are you using to encode the video? DivX Converter?
If you're using something like VirtualDub (http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/showsoftware_virtualdub_346.html), which allows you to configure the DivX certification profile, then you need to make sure you are using a profile that matches what the hardware in your car's DVD player supports. For DVD players, this usually means the "Home Theater" profile, which puts certain encoding limits that will hopefully ensure compatibility with a wide range of playback hardware.

Thanks for fast reply...
I used the divx converter (6.0 bundle) with the Home Theatre profile selected...however it shows me the error that I said alread (something with missing MPEG-1 audio)...
I also tried to encode with Dr. Divx 1.06... there when I select the destination... it says folder is read-only.... I have Vista with two profiles...tried to remove the read only...well..didn't manage so I don't really know if this software works.
My question really now is how do I know which version of divx each program uses?? Cause they just write divx...but it could be any version... I need up to 6.0...

@streetball,
If your player can play DivX, it means it can play MPEG4 ASP. It has NOTHING TO DO with which version of DivX you use as encoder. In fact it will play XviD encoded files too. As Admin advised, make sure you use the correct parameters when configuring DivX, like GMC,QPEL etc.
As for the audio codec error, install Lame mp3 (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm)(mp3 is mpeg 1 audio layer 3).

@streetball here's a link paglamon gave me awhile back that does a great job explaining the various xvid encoding settings:

guys... I've tried already paying some of xvid that I had. It doesn't play xvid movies! The pioneer guys specifically told me that the divx it supports up to 6.0 version. I can't really say what is the difference between the new versions, but for fact when I encoded with divx7 encoder using Home Theater profile...it could not recognize the file.
paglamon... I really appreciate the info you provided...but I don't really know how to use the settings and what software to use in order to convert.
I suppose there should be something for beginners
Once more... your help guys is really appreciated.
P.s. maybe the model of the device I'm talking about will help (pioneer avh-p4000dvd)

Please provide file information of any AVI(XviD or DivX) which is NOT playing in that player. Use Mediainfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en)to give us the full info.

Here are two files that I've tried... the first one was encoded using dr. divx 1.06 and it plays (far cry(...
the second one is xvid (revamped)...and the device does not support it.
Does this help to provide me with more feedback?

Just copy paste the text. Otherwise we will need to wait till the attachments are approved.

Well, it seems(from those text files) Far Cry is XviD encoded and Revamped is DivX. So, which one plays ok ?
streetball
30 Mar 2009, 04:32 AM
the DivX one.... moreover, it plays only up to divx 6.0 (as per pioneer rep office).
Before that I've tried encode using the divx 7 (home theater profile) and it didn't work.
One more question. I downloaded the lame mp3 from the site that you said. There is no installation file there...there is just an .exe file which doesn't do much..

In your earlier post you said that Far Cry is the one that plays OK. Please sort out your confusion first.
If you want to use Lame mp3 for encoding in Virtualdub, then you need this:http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm

paglamon... I am really sorry for the confusion. The file that DOES NOT play is the far cry...which is in xvid format.
About the lame mp3... I was asking how to use it with divx converter... cause as you can see above, it shows me that MPEG-1 audio codec is missing...
Thanks for you patience

I have never used DivX converter. For all my conversion needs I have used either Virtualdub or AVIDemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/). For VD you need to install that Lame ACM MP3(instructions are also given at that link). AVIDemux does not need any external codec, but it can only encode with XviD(no DivX support).
Do you get any error message when you try to play the XviD encoded file ? I still cannot comprehend that a player which can play DivX encoded avi will not play XviD encoded avi.
Can you upload a very small file(about 1 min. or so) which I can then encode with XviD and see if that plays in your player. In fact, you can upload 1 min. of Revamped(the DivX encoded) which I will reencode with XviD and then you can test with that file.

paglamon, could you encode any video file in xvid format... I don't have installed right now any software that could work with video files (to cut 1 min. from the file you requested).
If you will manage to make my receiver to play xvid files..that will make my life much easier.
maybe this will help... it is an extract from the manual of the player:
"DivX compatibility
! Compatible format: DivX video format implemented
in relation to DivX standards
! DivX Ultra format: No
! DivX files without video data: No
! Compatible audio codec: MP2, MP3, Dolby
Digital
! LPCM: No
! Bit rate: 8 kbps to 320 kbps (CBR), VBR
! Sampling frequency: 8 kHz to 48 kHz
! Compatible external subtitle file extension:

individual DivX video files are called “Titles”.

that by default they will be played in alphabetical

please note that they specifically write (including DivX 6!!!) therefore,7 is for sure not supported. :(

I have gone through that manual earlier. They mention DivX 6 may be because that was the latest version of DivX when the player was launched. It DOES NOT MEAN DivX 7 is not supported. As I said earlier, DivX or XviD are NOT formats. The format is MPEG4 ASP. DivX or XviD are merely the codecs. Both have to adhere to the standards laid down for the MPEG4 ASP formats. But DivX media file is a different thing altogether. That will have the extension .divx instead of .avi. If your player plays DivX encoded avi, it should also play XviD encoded avi.
I have uploaded 2 small files( from my trek video) encoded with both XviD and DivX. You try to play them and report back.

Thanks paglamon... I will report to you in few hours...
It is stil somehow confusing though. If you say that it shouldn't matter the version of divx codec....then why a file encoded with dr. divx, which uses a Divx5, is playable and a file encoded with the latest divx converter, which uses Divx 7, is not?!
Thanks for the files...!!!
If the problem is with the .avi extension.... could I just change to .divx ??? (just a thought...could be stupid :) )

The last thought is not stupid. But we will come to it later. It will also involve something called "FourCC".

well...here is my report to you..
the divx file does play!!!
xvid file does not play!!!
Hope this says something to you... :)

Right. Now download this:http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AVI_FourCC_Code_Changer.htm
Open the XviD file with this. Then ,in the box marked "FourCC used codec" write DX50 and click Apply. Now try to open the XviD in your player and report.

paglamon... yesterday.... I foudn this program through the internet and did already what you said with another xvid file that I had. However, instead of writing DX50... I wrote DIVX....the device could play it!!
I suppose this is a solution then!!
Please confirm if I understand correctly:
1.All the .avi files can be used with this programm (cause .avi files are either divx or xvid)
2.It doesn't matter which version of divx codec I use if I encode to divx...
and once more.... THANKS A LOT for assistance!!

1. Not ALL avi files. But all avi files encoded with XviD or DivX(i.e. all MPEG4 ASP files in avi container).
2. That's what I was saying all along.
You can also try changing FourCC to DX50. It seems your player can understand the FourCC DIVX or DX50.(The file that you could originally play, REVAMPED, had the FourCC DX50 ).
Glad that everything worked out fine. And now YOU can advise others who face this sort of a problem because of the salesman's lack of knowledge. :)

Paglamon... you are the man!!! ;)
Could I encode a movie using different profile in Divx 7 (let's say Hd profile or something else in order not to lose quality) and then just change the FourCC... will it still play it??
paglamon
1 Apr 2009, 03:34 AM
Changing FourCC does not change any parameter in the file(other than just fooling the player to recognise a specific identity code). The file still MUST comply with the different parameters. Now,what parameters a player will accept vary. Some players will play files with GMC,QPEL etc.Others will not. So,to ensure that most(if not all) players can play the file,it will be better to stick to the Home theatre profile(in DivX). Sometimes the player manual categorically mentions which parameters are needed in avi files for them to play.My LG DVD player clearly says that it does not support GMC or QPEL and resolution MUST NOT be greater than standard DVD resolution(i.e 720 x 576). But you can try on a rewritable disc and see what happens.
