Quality --> XVID-80% --versus-- Transcoding DVD (with deep analysis)?

Hi there... I've been transcoding some video to:

-DVD-5 format (eg. 1,05 gig)
-XVID format (using AGK, 80% quality setting) (eg. 856 MB)

I've played both next to each other and didn't notice any difference really. My wife commented the XVID version seemed a little brighter and easier on the eye.

Now my question, have there been any studies about the quality DVD-5 versus XVID-80%?? What are your own experiences and opinions?

As far as comparing your 2 Methods ... what is important is that it looks good to YOU & the WIFE when being played back on your Big TV and not on a Desktop or Laptop screen.

So if Xvid conversion looks Better on big screen then you got it made since Smaller file and Clearer picture.

Steve ... I thought I recalled seeing such a Comparison Frame by Frame somewhere before ... but for the life of me I could not find the darn thing.

Here is a Thread that should give you a Pretty Good feel for Encoders Comparison ... eventhough these Encoders are for MAC OS ... nonetheless, you will get the drift of what different Encoders can do for you.

BTW, you can make yourself go crazy in search of a "Perfect Encoder" ... you need to decide what LOOKS BEST TO YOU (your eyes) and forget the rest.

But remember anytime you use a Transcoder to reduce size of the Original file size ... you are reducing Quality ...

You can use AutoGK ... one step converter ... just make your file size larger 2GB ... basically half size of the original.

Also there is "DVD Rebuilder" program ... an excellent tool.

I used to use all-in-ones like AutoGK, but now that I know how to do it by hand I've never gone back.

The transcoders are great for starters, but the quality will often be better if you do it yourself. Now, if size is no object, use AutoGK on 100% quality mode and it'll be just as good as the source. However, where AutoGK fails is when trying to compress files to smaller sizes... that's where manual two-pass XVID comes in handy (using the bitrate calculator and such)

I like XviD also ... actually I did some PSP conversion and used H264 and XviD and I Liked the Xvid ... go figure.

But I used Click & Go software and not by hand. One of these days I need to get off my butt and learn the long-handed way.
