I have an HP 840b and wish to update the firmware. The drive is currently showing the firmware version as HI86. The firmware showing on (Firmware HQ) site is listed as HJ86. Is this a newer firmware version?

Also, once downloaded what needs to be done to install it? Is it just a matter of running the .exe? Or does something else need to be done first?

I also ran across this firmware form HP's site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-40561-1
Is this newer than the one offered from Firmware HQ (HJ86)?

I would ask here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&refresh=true

The support is done by HP users, not HP employees or official support. But there should be grids for driver and firmware updates for you model HP machine.

Note that anytime you update firmware, if you get corrupted or bad update software, it can render the hardware inoperative. I only update my firmware if there's some fix that I need... not just to have the latest. I've turned perfectly working external modems into paperweights in the past. The process is probably more reliable now than when it was new, but there's always some risk.
