I have a 266MHz AMD. And when I try to play my divx avi movie, it plays slowly, you know, hacking and freezing in between frames. Is there anything i can do?

Sorry for the bad news, but you will need new/additional hardware or you will only be able to play low quality movies with low bitrate and low resolution.

You can overclock the CPU too, but don't expect much. You won't get a decent speed increase and at the max. possible gain, the system will still be too slow to play high-resolution DivX comfortably, and stability becomes an issue as well.
Upgrading is a better idea, and you don't need a high-end system to be able to play most DivX videos out there. Most budget systems nowadays are powerful enough as well for playback purposes.

My movie computer next to the TV is:
AMD K6-2 500mhz
ATI Radeon
128 MB Ram
Check your Motherboard, you may be able to upgrade

Before running your video, lower your DESKTOP resolution to 256 colors (Also make certain that no unnecessary programs are running in the background).
I have an old 266 laptop (IBM with only 128Megs of RAM) that I lend to people, so that they can watch the DivX conversions I've made of my DVDs. Doing as I've mentioned above has brought smiles to many faces.
Let us know of your success ;>}

Tried running pc at 256 resolution but colors came out blotchy and when I opened up divx I got an error message.
I'm running a Pentium II class lappy with 160 Ram. So does this mean I'm gonna have to get a faster pc to view these .avi's so they don't come out choppy?
