Unix was a creation of Bell Labs

http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/

Linux is a similar system but without the need to pay any
licensing to Bell Labs. Also see GNU software.
Gnu is Not Unix. Same idea. Programs that work like unix programs but
that were created independently.

Best way is to get a bootable Linux Live CD and try it.
Even better if you have an old PC that you can experiment with that's hooked up to broadband via network card, try Mandriva OneCD install.

If you can afford to buy Unix instead then get a super duper sky's the limit no expense spared I7 PC to run it on instead.

Linux is way cheaper.
