Compatible Input Files

Can I assume that Virtual Dub doesn't accept dvd format files as input sources? Tried and it doesn't appear that it will...
I'm having brightnes issues with some already created homemade dvds, and TMPGEnc's trial period expired and I can't use it to (attempt to) brighten overly dark image quality.
If V-Dub can't, is there another simple program I could give a try?

What do want to do with your DVD movie anyway? You can try VideoReDo Plus which is outstanding tool for editing .mpg files

I created a dvd, but the picture quality is a tad darker than I'd like. I want to brighten the picture up some.

Yes, Virtualdub has the built-in filter to adjust the video's brightness. I normally use Avisynth filters instead for adjusting contrast and brightness

How do you get V-Dub to use Avisynth? This part is unknown territory for me, most of my experience is limited to simple stuff like creating complilations as such...

Although Avisynth is not so simple program to use, you'll get along with it after awhile. If you want to tweak the video and keep the movie as AVI, you can use AviSynth with Virtualdub. If you want to tweak the video and keep MPEG-2 as output, I recommend to use Avisynth to frameserve to HC Encoder which is a wonderful free tool too. For more info about these tools below:

I've run into another couple of problems. When converting, it creates a HUGE file size, and there's no setting visible to tell it to set a file size equal to the source file. There is mention to use 'Set old AVI' to keep it from going over 1gb, and I set it to that, but each attempt resulted in humonguos files sizes that filled the free space on the hdd (50gb) and the problem stopping.

The other problm is that file selection winds up separating the file into chunks, rather than the whole file being imported. I can't find any info in te contents to import a file intact, rather than multiple VOB chunks...
