Question Converting AC3 sound in XviD to mp3

Hi,

this is a bit of an audio question so I hope its not out of place.

I have an Xvid file with AC3 sound and I'm thinking of converting it to mp3 so I can (a) be able to boost the sound levels a little (its too low right now) and (b) get broader compatibility with systems that don't have the AC3 codecs installed.

So my questions are:

1. Is there a way that I can open the file in VDub or VDub mod and recompress the sound directly in mp3 (I tried it in VDubMod but when I selected mp3 compression I couldn't get it to work).

Or:

2. Is there another way of demuxing the audio, converting to mp3 and then muxing again?

And is the whole thing pointless because AC3 is much better than mp3?

Any advice would be great, thanks!

That's helpful, thank you, but what I need to do is extract the audio in VirtualDub, hence I'm guessing I need a decoding filter of some kind to be able to to process/demux the audio stream...

Or have I missed something?

OK, I've managed to extract the audio using VDubMod. Don't know why it didn't work before...

Now I have the .ac3 file and I'm trying to folow the besweet instructions, but I don't see a choice for converting ac3 to any other formats, only ac3 to ac3.

Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong?

you cant choose anything in that output dropdown (number 2)?

did you read this line in my guide:
Quote:
In case you cannot chose OGG as output format yet, go to square 2 on the right side of the main BeSweet window and select OGG there. This will automatically name your output file OGG as well.
would that possibly make a difference?
