Why Are Cartoons So Difficult To Encode?

    hi guys,

i have a few cartoon dvds (both regions 1/2) that i wish to encode to divx but there are always horizontal lines across the whole screens during every fast motion scenes that make it unwatchable.

i tried using both divx 3/5 and used the deinterlaced option in xmpeg but still to no avail. the lines appear in most cartoons (~80%) of them. is there a way 'round this?

what do you guys use/recommend of this type of films? thanks & appreciate for help.

Those are interlace artifacts that you are getting. You need to apply a deinterlacer to remove them, or better, perform Inverse Telecine.

XMPEG, being a derivative of Flask, wouldn't do deinterlacing well at all and hence the lines remaining there even after you activate the deinterlacer. I'd suggest that you use the more properly functional deinterlacer such as Smart Deinterlacer for Virtualdub, or the built-in deinterlacer of GordianKnot. For your information, Gordianknot has built-in support for Inverse Telecine.

Or you can use force film in DVD2AVI.
But this is only on region one, region two use fast deinterlace in GK or maby greedyhma.
There's a post that describes greedy but I don't rmember where, search for it if you're intersted. It works better than GK deinterlacer.

          hi guys,

thanks for invaluable info, i will try using virtualdub to do. now, where is the de-interlacing option in virtualdab? those of you who have used it, have you got decent results from it?

The Deinterlacer is built into Virtualdub's collection of filters. I'd recommend that you use the more powerful Smart Deinterlacer though.

You may want to give this old, but nevertheless useful, guide a try. It should work perfectly for your particular source.

I haven't done Monsters before, but if your problem is similar to that of TerryC, my advice should work alright.

                          Dear all

every time I try to encode a DVD I get the same problem: lines on the screen.
I think it is the same kind of interlace artifacts you quote in your posts.
Well, the DVDs I tried are all region 2, PAL, interlaced (so DVD2AVI says in its info box).
I use gordian knot and DIVX5 pro.
The previews I get in virtualdub on the final avi files are perfect, but when I try to play them on DivX player, WinDVD, RealPlayer, Microsoft Media Player or Power DVD I always get the same damned lines.
I tried to use smart deinterlace in virtual dub without success.
Maybe I am making some mistake.
My question is: were do I have to apply the smart deinterlace filter?
Do I have to use the filter in the virtual dub while encoding the avi files?
                          Which are the right settings?

                          Thank you in advance

                          Best Regards

                            hi,

the smart deinterlace feature is built into virtualdub itself. it worked perfectly with all of my cartoons plus a few oldies (usually films from 80s and older), but here are the steps:

                            1. load the problematic avi into virtualdub

                            2. make sure the "audio" is set to "direct stream copy"

                            3. in "video" tab, go to "compression" option and enter the bitrate of the original avi, otherwise you re-encoded clip will be ridiculously large!

                            4. in "video" tab again, go to "filters" and click "add". then a new dialogue box appears and you should see "deinterlace". upon selecting it, you should see a "configure" button. then go into that and choose "smart interlace (best)" from the list.

                            5. finally, go to "save avi" from "file" menu and rename the new file.

                            6. time to grab something to eat/drink and the process will take anything up to 2 hours depending on length of movie.

                            terry

                              Hi Terry

                              just a clarification.
When I open the compression menu under the video tab the bitrate menu is grayed, because the "no compression" mode is the default choice.
However there are many available codecs and compression modes in the menu.
Which one should I choose to set the bitrate?
The same DIVX5 i used to code the original AVI or something else?

                              Thanks

                              Bye
