I dont know how to convert divx3.11 to divx 4 or 5 but because it seems no one in this forum knows howto do it(or at least anyone who knows is not replying) I will tell you the little bit that I know.

In my experience It doesn't matter really if it can be done or not because you would have to encode the video-movie again some how to make it divx 4 or 5 and each time you encode a movie it reduces in quality.

For example; lets say you have a DVD movie you want to back up, you use divx 3.11 to encode it. Once it has been encoded it has reduced in quality and is no longer DVD quality. Then if you wanted to change it from divx3.11 to divx 5.02pro, the divx 5.02pro would only have a lesser quality source movie of the divx3.11 and thus making it even worse in quiality. Condiering divx5.02pro can not enocode at the exact quality as the source movie.

Having said all that I have come to remember that I use to do this kind of encoding a long time ago(divx3.11 era), I will tell you all that I can remember.

To start off with you can not just change from divx3.11 to divx4 or 5. First you must make the divx3.11 movie into a mpg file, I cant remember what program I used to do this but I think it was TMPGENC or VIRTUAL-DUB. after that you need to encode the movie into divx4 or 5, again I can't remember what program I used to do this but I think it was FLASK0594 or VIRTUAL-DUB/NANDUB.

this question has been asked and answered before.

thus dont expect us to do all the work for you and repeating ourselves over and over again because you dont know how to make your *acquired* files play on some divx player!
