    what about PAL vs. NTSC?

Hi, I'm new here, forgive me if this has been covered (it doesn't look like it's been covered in this section, at any rate.) But do these "region free" programs also make it possible to play PAL DVDs? To what extent is the PAL issue a problem with, say, WinDVD and a typical "region countdown" type R1 DVD-ROM drive? I'm dying to pick up the new R2 edition of 'The Killer' but am concerned about the PAL issue. Any advice, info, links will be appreciated.

    Hi, and welcome.
You might be lucky enough to find a region free firmware for your DVD drive here.
I did and no issues at all. WinDVD will have no problems.
There are software alternatives such as Dvdgenie or http://www.dvdidle.net/

Right -- isn't the whole PAL vs. NTSC thing a separate issue though? I'm not too concerned about the region -- it seems like that's easy enough to get around -- but I'm not sure if my drive can handle PAL.

I'm sure your drive will handle PAL the same way it handles NTSC.
Have a look here my friend.

You should only be worried about the different formats if you intend on buying dvd's from another continent...
Did you know you can SEARCH the forum? Fixes common problems too:

            That's exactly what I'm planning!

I read that linked FAQ before posting, and it says: "Most DVD PC software and hardware can play both NTSC and PAL video and both Dolby Digital and MPEG audio," which is encouraging, it's just that 'most' I wanted to double-check on. I wondered if there's an easy way to check or if essentially I'm safe in assuming the PAL thing won't be a problem for my PC.

            Thanks,

            B
